Ask-the-Experts, Tracks, Bootcamp and Midnight Mobile Madness at SAPinsider BI 2012 conference

When you study the conference details in the SAPinsider Conference Guide you find in total 35 different tracks, two different Bootcamps, discussion sessions, solution showcase, sponsored educational sessions, the Ask-the-Expert event in the evening, as well as a mysterious Midnight Mobile Madness event. Note to the event team: All the sessions are great and I really love the conference, but please try to reduce the agenda complexity next year.

On the other hand: Your mobile agenda is well received and I like the professional Twitter walls.

Here are some personal impression and the slide show with my conference pictures:

I used the change to join Rich Travis in the IBM Lounge for his discussion ‘BWA or SAP HANA: What is the right solution for your needs?’ Absolutely great discussion with a lot of fundamental questions. Note to myself: SAP and partner need to provide even more educational insights into the role of HANA as ‘pure’ database for BW and the usage of a by-side HANA with data modeling capabilities. There is so much customer interest, but a lot of confusion. Even more if you start to combine both for analytics. So important to have sessions like this one to shape the picture. And the answer to the question? In most cases:  Go HANA!

William Adams was the speaker for the ‘2012 guide to sizing an SAP landscape: Techniques and tools to optimize performance and scalability’. Sounds like fun for geeks and so the first check showed that the business people were clearly outnumbered in that session. But the first lesson for sizing is: This is no game for geeks only. You need your business colleagues, your hardware vendor and your data center experts to do it the right way. Challenge is to agree on the same language, as SAP speaks SAPS, your hardware partner CORE and your business colleague talks about orders per week. Second lesson: Sizing does never end. You may start with budget, advanced, or expert sizing, but then you go on with re-, delta or upgrade sizing. Go Sizing!

An absolute highlight and the perfect finish for the day are the Ask-the Expert sessions in the Grand Ballroom at 5:30pm. Great idea to provide an additional handout with the experts list in the breakout sessions upfront. Applause to all the speakers who made themselves available to answer the questions – lot’s of questions! My personal highlight was to meet the SAP Mentors Ingo Hilgefort (@ihilgefort) and Tammy Powlas (@tpowlas) there. So impressive to see how they do listen and engage. Go Mentors!

Midnight Mobile Madness – what a promise! Most of the conference attendee found out that this happened in a smaller room with limited capacity when the registration list was closed already. The lucky ones inside started with a race for questions to collect points for gifts. The agenda until midnight was packed with alternating games and infos from mobile experts. Inbetween the bar was open all the time and the consumption rate of Corona was amazing. A colleagues from SAP Sybase asked Siri to do the presentation job, but it refused and so he had to do. Conclusion? Go Mobile!

Looking forward to the SAPinsider conference next year. In the meantime: See you at the ASUG Annual Conference in May? Let’s talk about High Availability for BW powered by HANA at the SAPrunsSAP booth!
