SAP NetWeaver Portal: News from December 2011
It is time for the Portal news for the month of December. It is the last news blog for this year.
In this edition we have prepared a report on our first tweetchat and we list some highlights of the year 2011.
First Portal Tweetchat
On December 15 we had our first Portal tweetchat with our Portal experts Vitaly Vainer, Yariv Zur and Ohad Yassin. The topic was “Author Business Sites with SAP on demand Portal”. Our experts were live on Twitter answering questions about the “SAP on demand Portal” strategy and gave a deeper inside into this project. It was a new and exiting experience for us. We had a lively discussion on Twitter and our experts were working hard to answer all the questions.

Highlights of the Year
Very Smooth Ramp-Up of SAP NW 7.3, General Availability and Great Adoption
SAP NetWeaver Portal 7.3 marks our brand new go-to release and serves as the basis for further upcoming product enhancements. After an exciting ramp-up phase, SAP NetWeaver 7.3 has been made generally available on May 30, 2011 and has already reached a very good adoption.
During the six month evaluation period, the back office team supported more than 50 active customer projects with product information, how-to guides and recommendations. In addition partners started to evaluate the product and made their add-on solutions available on the new release. All in all it was a very successful and smooth ramp-up phase with a lot of positive customer feedback on product quality and stability.
Many customers went already live during the second half of 2011 and use their Portal productively.
TechEds in Las Vegas, Bangalore and Madrid
From all the TechEds we visited we came back with the same impressions and feedback: The Portal lectures, hands-on sessions, pods and live expert session were absolutely in full capability and we were very happy to hear the great feedback for the current SAP NetWeaver Portal version (7.3) and our plans for the future. It was a great experience for us and it gave us a strong motivation for our plans for the next year. And we hope to see you again at TechEd 2012.
New releases and products in our portfolio
We added two new applications to SAP NetWeaver Portal, which were developed by SAP together with OpenText: SAP Portal Content Management by OpenText, an enterprise solution for managing document-related content; and SAP Portal Site Management by OpenText, a solution helping a broad number of users easily manage Web content. For more information see this wiki page.
And, on top of all of these, we delivered a new and exciting version of Enterprise Workspaces 1.1, which enable all our portal end-users to compose content by their own with zero interaction from the IT department. And we also provided a trial version of Enterprise Workspaces which can be downloaded and used for free for 90 days: http://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/scn/downloads?rid=/library/uuid/80d323fb-71e7-2e10-9b9a-bd830ca433a1.
Preview: New Releases and Plans for 2012
You can already make a sneak preview on the development of Portal in 2012.
SAP on demand Portal is at the moment a project code name for a cloud-based solution that enables business users to quickly and easily create sites. SAP on demand Portal is based on SAP Cloud Platform for Java-based applications and SAP HANA. This solution provides out-of-the-box secure and accelerated integration with customers’ on-premise system, allowing for content reuse. SAP Cloud Platform and SAP HANA – together with SAP Gateway – provide the means for developing new innovative applications that are deployed to the cloud and easily embedded into the sites. The solution is planned to be available for private Beta evaluation in Q1 2012. Release is planned for mid-2012. For more information see also this wiki page.
And there is another new project we are working on to bring SAP NetWeaver Portal to the next level of innovation: “Portal on Device“, which will make SAP NetWeaver Portal accessible on mobile devices. An official release of this exiting new Portal capability is planned for 2012. For more information see this wiki page.
