     I look into the differences between these two solutions to explain which one would be best for the various SAP BusinessObjects Enterprise XI 3.1 landscapes. Every SAP BusinessObjects installation should have a system monitoring and analysis solution. I will endeavor to cover the differences and which solution fits the landscape better.

     Let’s first start off with a direct comparison this chart covers when it is most appropriate to install each solution based upon the specific situation. Not all environments are created equal thus there are two solutions to choose from that provide a broad offering of solutions.

REMOTE SUPPORT COMPONENT SITUATIONS

     Remote support component strictly supports SAP BusinessObjects Enterprise 3.1 SP2 and higher. For those customers that do not have a number of SAP solutions and may only have SAP BusinessObjects Enterprise then the remote support component is tailored for you. With the remote support component service pack 3 the time to install and configure remote support component is quite minimal and is as low as 30 minutes per host. This cannot be accomplished when implementing a Solution Manager implementation. Remote support component can be thought of as a streamlined Solution Manager designed specifically to monitor and analyze SAP BusinessObjects Enterprise, in particular for the situations in which resources are unable to be committed to achieve a full Solution Manager installation.

     Many ecosystems may have a Solution Manager installation somewhere, however the Business Intelligence teams are unable to connect the SAP BusinessObjects Enterprise system to this Solution Manager due to resource constraints. For these types of issues remote support component is recommended as the stepping stone. With the service pack 3 release remote support component has established an upgrade facility to a full Solution Manager installation. Technologically speaking an SAP BusinessObjects Enterprise system that has been instrumented for remote support component to monitor has also been instrumented for Solution Manager to monitor. As remote support component automatically updates itself, the upgrade path to Solution Manager is available without having to apply a patch manually.

SOLUTION MANAGER SITUATIONS

     If there are other SAP products that reside in the ecosystem and SAP BusinessObjects Enterprise monitoring is required, then Solution Manager is an appropriate choice. Since a Solution Manager deployment is available the only requirement is to then enable the SAP BusinessObjects Enterprise system for Solution Manager. The functionality of Solution Manager 7.0 + SAP BusinessObjects Enterprise 3.1 SP2+  includes Early Watch Alert reports and Root Cause Analysis (via Wily) exactly as remote support component. In addition it includes a broad range of other functionality available for the other products in the ecosystem.

RESOURCE INVOLVEMENT

     Remote support component has been a 4-6 hour install for an experienced BusinessObjects administrator. This time is being reduced to 30 minutes per host as of service pack 3. The reduction of this installation time was the prime focus for the development team. Solution Manager is a much larger server installation and it is designed for the entire SAP ecosystem. Because of this it has a much larger footprint than remote support component. The installation and configuration time of Solution Manager end to end is about five days.
