Too Long ...

Dear all,

It’s been too long, I know.

At the beginning of the year, I began working for a very talented & dynamic company. My bosses are knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and work smart. Quite the opposite of what I was used to.

This change, brought new opportunities in the BI space. Working with Crystal Reports, Live Office, BusinessObjects, Xcelsius, using a variety of data access methods for live and off-line, from BW and ECC, brought me a new set of challenges and frustrations.

My last blog, "The Full Monty", presented the trials and tribulations of installing the SAP NetWeaver Sneak Preview (NSP) and collection of SAP BusinessObjects programs. Readers were in a position to view, what was about to happen, and see the outcome of installing programs, prior to actually doing so. They could also identify the results of successful steps during the building and configuration of the environment.

Only one problem with it now: it’s out-dated.

For my new series, “Caboodle”, the mission is still the same, only with later versions.

“A self-contained environment, hosting the latest trial NSP, 7.02, and BusinessObjects 4.x”

I will also target this to a more proficient audience, as the “hand holding” with certain screen shots and lengthy texts for perform simple tasks, just took me too long. So be aware, you will need to have a certain level of technical literacy, acronyms & initials.

Dare I say, issues will be encountered, and I hope to show you how to resolve them.

SAP Guides will be followed where possible, however, when I run into trouble, I'll be knocking on your doors, to help me get through.

One other point, this time, it will be installed on a 64bit Windows 7 Virtual Machine from the outset. I am likely to host the VM on a VM server. Maybe for a small contribution, this can be "rented" out, who knows.

So here we go with the basic hardware and software setup.

Physical Machine

It’s an HP Pavilion DV7-4007TX running Windows 7 Professional 64bit, with 8Gb RAM and an Intel i7 CPU Q 720@1.6GHz. It’s the best Windows machine I have ever worked on, with only the vertical screen resolution at 900 letting it down.

I am going to guess that we’ll need around 150GB worth of disk space, based upon the size of the “The Full Monty” VM.

Virtual Machine

Running the Windows 7 Ultimate ‘N’ 64bit OS. The ‘N’ only means it does not contain Windows Media Player. As you can see below, I gave it the minimum recommended 4GB. This may change as I progress. The VM hard drive is also set to 100GB, again, it may change.

In “Control Panel”->“Programs and Features” you can see barely anything is installed. My faithful “Spybot” and 4 other items.

Navigating to “Windows Features”, you can see I have “Internet Explorer 9”, and pretty much nothing else.

Firewall is off …

 … and no Antivirus installed.

Finally, I switched off the automatic updates in Windows.

I have done nothing to enable/disable any Windows Services, so they are all set to whatever when Windows was installed.

I will also maintain the VM with the latest updates from Windows and any other software.

So, “Let the games begin” with the downloading and installation of the trial NetWeaver 7.02 system. Caboodle - Part 1 - The NSP 7.02 Install
