Patrick Tupper is Vice President, Business Development for SAP Global IT, and leads the SAP Runs SAP initiative. He spoke with Bill Kozel about the team’s plans for Global SAPPHIRE NOW 2011 in Orlando, May 15-18.

Bill Kozel: Pat, for the first time ever, the SAP Runs SAP team plans to have a big presence at Global SAPPHIRE NOW 2011. Who will be there?

Pat Tupper: We’ll have eight people on the ground at SAPPHIRE NOW. Four members of the Global IT management team – including our CIO Oliver Bussmann – will be giving presentations and holding meetings with our top customers. Four other subject matter experts will be discussing our experiences as SAP’s first customer at our demo pod in the Line of Business campus, at the In-memory Test Drive area in the Technology Campus, and at the Business Analytics campus.

The SAP Runs SAP demo pod will be especially compelling, because people will get a glimpse of some of the first production systems of SAP’s recent innovations. They’ll enjoy seeing what’s ahead, and we’ll enjoy getting their feedback and suggestions.

Bill: Why should people come to see you?

Pat: We’re running the next generation of SAP solutions, and we’ve got hands-on experience and best practices for some of today’s coolest technologies – from some incredible mobile apps to the latest HANA-enabled analytics.

We know what these applications are doing for our business – and you can easily envision what they’ll do for you a few months down the road. So I think the question is: why wouldn’t you come to see us?

Bill: For those who may not know, give us a little background on what SAP Runs SAP is all about.

Pat: SAP Runs SAP is about partnering with our development organization to make sure that we are an early adopter of emerging technologies and solution enhancements – in many cases we are our own first customer.

This collaboration between development and IT makes our products better, and also ensures that our internal lines of business are some of the first to benefit from SAP’s innovations.

Working closely with the field, we also share best practices and lessons learned with our customers. We’ve found that our customers appreciate the opportunity to share knowledge with other IT practitioners, in CIO-to-CIO and IT-to-IT meetings.

Bill: Where can people go to learn more?

Pat: We’ll include an overview of our agenda with this post.

Also stop by our demo pod in the Line of Business campus, or by the In-memory Test Drive area in the Technology Campus, where we’ll have a representative. We’ll also be giving regular updates over Twitter using the #SAPRunsSAP  hashtag throughout the show.
