The ramp-up of SAP NetWeaver 7.3 started end of November 2010. This latest release introduces the new portal capabilities and various improvements in the area of business user empowerment and productivity, usability and collaboration or content integration and management.

Among the Portal capabilities of SAP NetWeaver 7.3 are also some new forum features. Forums provide a framework to easily share and contribute knowledge and information in an intuitive way within the company by giving employees, customers, suppliers and partners a framework to collaborative writing and help to save time by making ideas available, sharing knowledge and managing related information. Forums have been already available since SAP NetWeaver 7.0 SPS 12.

The new forum features in SAP NetWeaver 7.3 are:

Rating forum threads and messages

The ratings feature can be switched on or off in the forum configuration. When a rating scale is defined the users can rate messages and threads based on this scale:

Watch also this short demo on the forum rating feature.

Import and Export

You can transport forum content such as categories, forums, or mixed content from one forum system to another. You can export the respective content from one system in an archive file and then import this file to another forum system.
You can also use the import and export feature for backing up your stored data or for transferring data from an old system to a new one when upgrading it or moving it to a new system on a different location.
As a forum administrator, you can import and export: categories (names, descriptions), forums (names, descriptions), threads, messages, settings and properties, hierarchies, users, permissions and attachments (images, documents).

Integration of Knowledge Management (KM) repositories

When you have Knowledge Management (KM) installed together with the Portal application, you can configure access to KM. This enables the forum users to browse in KM repositories and to insert links to KM documents and objects in forum messages.

Public API

You can use the forum API to develop forum feature add-ons. You find more information via this link to the Javadocs (link to Javadocs).

Virus Scanner Changes

In order to ensure that messages and attachments are free from viruses, you can enable virus scanning in your forums system in three steps:
(1) You use the SAP NetWeaver Administrator to configure a virus scan provider. (2) You install a virus scan interceptor. (3) You enable and configure the virus scanning in the forums application.

    Hi Vera,

Do you’ve any guide lines to start develop/customize the forums using the both the below API available from SAP side:

I’ve given a trial but no use 🙁 , is there any blog, case study, ref’ material on writing our own application by using the APIs available?

    Thanks, MS

Thanks a lot Vera! I would be very happy to reach to forum-development team to clarify few very important topics. Mean while, do the Forums in Portal has been configured/exposed as WebServices (SOAP or REST)??

        Thanks, MS

    Hi Vera,

Do you know if it is possible for the Portal Administrator to subscribe end-users to a new Forum? In other words to set the “Watch Forum” for someone?  This might come handy to start a new forum.

    Thanks,

    Jacques.

We would wait for Vera’s response anyways, but Jacques i’ve many such requirements to be met in the forums functionalities… that includes your Q too..!

And from the standard forum-admin config, i’m not sure this is possible.. we need to customize using the APIs available.. which is what i’m currently exploring..!

      Thanks, MS

        Hi Naga,

I would like to make you aware that the Wiki/Forum solution is considered as more or less feature complete. We also do not plan bigger feature enhancements in the future. The functionality covers every basic requirement and is also sufficient for the majority of customers.

We meanwhile concentrate our development forces in directions to cloud, mobile and HANA.

        Regards

        Vera

Thanks again Vera for your replies! We do realize on SAP’s direction towards the said areas, and my requirement on this forums is to address one of those key areas .. MOBILITY! And when checked with Avaid, “SAP doesn’t have any plans to mobilize the Forums on POD”.

I would like to continue on customizing the forums functionality, but my interaction with the forums-development team would helps me a lot!

          Thanks & Regards, MS

        Hi Vera,

        Thanks for your answer.

It is a pity, that would really be useful when you try to start up a Forum with a defined group of people in your Company.  Sending E-mails to promote a new Forum and is not very efficient.

Is there any valid reason that I overlook why this would not be considered while you can subscribe people to a folder or a document?

        Thanks.

        Jacques.

        Hi Naga thanks,

you can set in the admin settings “enable image”, but there is no icon when you create a Thread to insert an image. Nor copy paste is working.

So I was not able to find anywhere any information how to insert an image to a thread.

You’re welcome. ^^ I had looked at that exact same issue some days ago, that’s why I knew what you were talking about. 😀

              Regards,

              Steffi.
