The ramp-up of SAP NetWeaver 7.3 started end of November 2010. This latest release introduces the new portal capabilities and various improvements in the area of business user empowerment and productivity, usability and collaboration or content integration and management.

Among the Portal capabilities of SAP NetWeaver 7.3 are also some new forum features. Forums provide a framework to easily share and contribute knowledge and information in an intuitive way within the company by giving employees, customers, suppliers and partners a framework to collaborative writing and help to save time by making ideas available, sharing knowledge and managing related information. Forums have been already available since SAP NetWeaver 7.0 SPS 12.

The new forum features in SAP NetWeaver 7.3 are:

Rating forum threads and messages

The ratings feature can be switched on or off in the forum configuration. When a rating scale is defined the users can rate messages and threads based on this scale:

Import and Export

You can transport forum content such as categories, forums, or mixed content from one forum system to another. You can export the respective content from one system in an archive file and then import this file to another forum system.
You can also use the import and export feature for backing up your stored data or for transferring data from an old system to a new one when upgrading it or moving it to a new system on a different location.
As a forum administrator, you can import and export: categories (names, descriptions), forums (names, descriptions), threads, messages, settings and properties, hierarchies, users, permissions and attachments (images, documents).

Integration of Knowledge Management (KM) repositories

When you have Knowledge Management (KM) installed together with the Portal application, you can configure access to KM. This enables the forum users to browse in KM repositories and to insert links to KM documents and objects in forum messages.

Public API

You can use the forum API to develop forum feature add-ons. You find more information via this link to the Javadocs (link to Javadocs).

Virus Scanner Changes

In order to ensure that messages and attachments are free from viruses, you can enable virus scanning in your forums system in three steps:
(1) You use the SAP NetWeaver Administrator to configure a virus scan provider. (2) You install a virus scan interceptor. (3) You enable and configure the virus scanning in the forums application.

For more information on forums see also Collaboration in SAP NetWeaver Portal.
