As the SAP Business ByDesign Channel Partner of the Year, North America and also the first early North American channel partner to implement the SAP Business ByDesign solution, we’ve learned a few things. Our implementations to date have taught us a few best practices I’d like to share from a cloud ERP implementation standpoint.

1.       From a customer standpoint, when going through an implementation, don’t forget the current processes you do like. Most of the time, customers focus so much on the processes they don’t like and hence forget to give attention to the processes they do like.

2.       From an implementation standpoint, find out as much as you can about the system the customer is coming from and what features they are using on a regular basis.  The customers may assume that SAP Business ByDesign will do everything that their small system will do and more, but some of these simple things are very difficult to program in a system like ByDesign and therefore not available.

3.       Also, find out as much about the customer’s processes upfront, show them the capabilities of the system and identify the gaps. This needs to be done as early as possible during the implementation. Once the resolutions/workarounds to the gaps are identified, document everything and get it signed off.

On Moving to the Cloud

Is your business moving to the cloud or considering?

First ask yourself if it is a structural change or a transitory change? Industry experts tend to agree it is a structural change, so if you agree, you need to think about your business as it exists in the new structural environment.  Disruptive technology arises every day, so does your near term (1 year) to long term (5 year) business plan necessitate a transformation, and if you don’t, are you left behind with your competitors?  What does a cloud solution offer you and your company specifically from a strategic positioning perspective for you, in your industry, and your competition?

If you are looking to learn more about cloud strategies, please join me as I put SAP’s Global Head of Solution Marketing, Chris Horak, in the hot seat. From a partner and customer perspective, I will explore more into SAP’s cloud strategy and how SAP Business ByDesign fits in.
