Like others, I am also passionate about new SAP releases and updating our self daily to align with the pace of new technology.

Recently SAP ECC6.0 EHP5 released, and as usual to get information on that I went to .  While browsing the help, I was stuck in very first page and a question came in my mind, what is business function and difference between various business function types?

To understand concept in detail, let’s go txn sfw5:

In newly installed system where nothing is activate you can see the following screen:

Enterprise extension represents first generation business functions implemented with SAP R/3 Enterprise (SAP R/3 4.7).  Integrated with switch frame work and activation of enterprise extension brings large number of industry-independent and industry specific application and business process.

Enterprise business function represents an industry-independent business function used by general industry independent areas of SAP and by industry solutions if required.

Now if you click on drop down of business functions set you can see the various industries, Business function set represents a group of business function which belongs to a specific industry solution.

Once you activate the industry business function set (you can activate at a time only one industry business function set in an ECC system). Here for example active industry solution “Utilities”

Now you will able to see the industry business functions, Industry business function represents  the business functions belong to industry and part of business function set.

Industry business function can be used only if corresponding business function set is activated.
