Did you attend SAP TechEd 2010 this year and have the challenge to figure out what all the new things announced by SAP would mean for you and the company you are working for?

This Blog intends to shed some light on exectly those questions. Let me start by putting some of the new technologies announced by SAP into the context they belong:

  • Enterprise Workspaces and the Web Page Composer both aim at enabling the business user to provide tailored Enterprise Portal 7.3 content.
  • HANA 1.0 (SAP High-Performance Analytic Appliance) is an in-memory database that replicates existing business information warehouse data for fast access. It's existance is transparant for the business users. They will only realize the performance increase.
  • River is a cloud based development environment provided by SAP. It aims at the application developer.
  • SAP Mobile Gateway 1.1 is a layer of software to allow for the lean consumption of SAP ERP systems, mainly for the use in user interfaces and mobile access.
  • SAP / Sybase Unwired Platform 1.5.0 and Afaria build SAP's platform the development and management of mobile applications and mobile devices.
  • SAP Data Services are tools for bulk data movement and cleansing aiming at the information manager.
  • SAP Process Integration (PI) 7.3 is SAP's attempt to provide an integration broker with the qualities of an enterprise service bus (ESB) based on its Advanced Adapter Engine. This aims at the integration manager.

There will be more new capabilites and features that come with the integrated SAP NetWeaver 7.3 release but I found the above to be the more difficult to sort out ones.

So what does this mean for you? If you asked me I would say that it would mean that you would have to update your IT architecture and SAP roadmap, if you already had one, or if you didn't it would be more beneficial than ever to build them. To be more precice with an up-to-date IT architecture and SAP roadmap you could expect at least to

  • reduce wasted effort by investing resources in what matters to the business
  • align busniess and IT with a common language
  • reduce confusion and avoid blind alleys
  • reduce time spent making investment decisions
  • link IT investments to business benefits
  • uncover opportunities for quick wins
  • measure and maximize you success
