Trilogy about 1st SCN Dashboard Design Challenge in China – Episode 3

In my previous 2 blogs (Episode Trilogy about 1st SCN Dashboard Design Challenge in China – Episode 1 and Trilogy about 1st SCN Dashboard Design Challenge in China – Episode 2), I introduced the Dashboard Design Challenge and 6 finalists’ excellent dashboard. Finally, it was the time to find out who would be the final winner of Demo Jam and final results of Dashboard Design Challenge at TechEd Shanghai 2010.

Although it’s been 10 more days since Demo Jam, I still freshly remember I was completely exhausted and very pleased to witness the success of 1st Demo Jam at TechEd Shanghai. It was everyone (includes studio crew, 6 jammers, TechEd event team, Bravo Xu (my team member) and audience) who made evening event succeed.

The evening event was host in Chinese and so were demos presented. However, Mark Yolton, Marco ten Vaanholt and Chip Rodgers told me they fully understood what demos were about on the way back to their hotel as the data visualizations and their logic from all 6 jammers were crystal clear.

All 6 jammers did a great presentation. In hindsight, all of them should be the winner of 1st Demo Jam at TechEd Shanghai. Mr. Perry Manross, who is from SAPTV, interviewed Eric Chan, Demo Jam winner.

He said during his interview:

“…I’m really excited and glad…Winning the Demo Jam is not my personal honour. This honour should be shared with the other 5 Jammers. Because their demos are all very excellent…I’m an art lover, so I put my own artistic idea into the dashboard in order to help our customers solve business problems and make decisions…That’s really cool…”

Although he was shy, he could not hide his excitement in meeting so many friends with the  same interest in dashboard design.

The final results of Dashboard Design Challenge were announced after Demo Jam.

  1. Winner: Miss Dan Ai, Airport Operation Management Cockpit
  2. 2nd Place:
Mr. Eric Chan, Retail Performance Dashboard
Mr. Congyang Xie, Business operation and human resource management of retail industry
  3. 3rd Place:
Mr. Ray Li, SAP BO Product Sales & Customer Analysis
Mr. Junfeng Wang, University Budget and Financial Analysis
    Mr. Wei Zhu, Clever Touches

Perry also interviewed Dan after Demo Jam. Dan is an elegant lady and journalist by trade. Creating dashboard is one of her hobbies. The dashboard she created is to present data from the daily operations at an airport, including departure time,  flight number, cargo weight, number of travelers, and flight punctuality.

She said during her interview:

“Winning this award made me extremely surprised and honored… I found the demos very professional and really splendid… I learned a lot from the other contestants and their excellent work.”

I had talks with other 2 jammers, Wei Zhu and Congyang Xie, on 2nd day of TechEd and asked about their feedback and feelings about Demo Jam.

Wei said, “Demo Jam is a really excellent platform to showcase…It helps our experts to demonstrate how technologies can be applied to business application.
It also offers lots of opportunities and space to us… Demo Jam is a very good idea and has a promising future…With more and more users, design and ideas involved, it will certainly showcase various solutions in depth. Certainly, more and more excellent innovations will be brought up, and these will bring better products and more talents…”

Congyang expressed his strong interests to participate in Demo Jam at TechEd US He’s full of confidence to compete with other experts and win the trophy. He said, “Demo Jam is really a good show to excite the TechEd attendees and SCN should keep doing this. Teams should be encouraged more to participate in the future Demo Jams. I am also looking forward to participating in the Demo Jam in United States…”

All in all, it’s a very good start to introduce Demo Jam in China. I personally look forward to 2nd Demo Jam in TechEd Beijing in 2011.
