A few weeks ago a friend of mine Steve Bogner asked if I would be interested in being his first guest interview to talk about the Employee Interaction Center (EIC) in his newly created series focused on SAP Human Capital Management (HCM).
After listening to what seems like 100 podcasts from Jon Reed (www.jonerp.com) which I would highly recommend, I figured I it was my turn to have my voice “heard” and agreed. It was a very interesting learning experience as I had to step slightly outside my comfort zone and I thought I would share some insight.
Be Original – I initially planned to just answer the questions with whatever came to mind as I know the topic area very well. As we got closer to recording the podcast I changed direction and spent time preparing detailed responses for each question. In the end I found that having that written response although helpful wouldn’t have worked in the podcast format as reading from a script would have been obvious and made a boring podcast. The bottom line is it is important to prepare but also to find your own style and be yourself.
Provide Value – My goal was to provide detailed information and my views on a SAP product (Employee Interaction Center) that is not very known in the marketplace. I believe I provided overall value but the ultimate judge will be the listener of the podcast. It is important that anything you put your name on has a quality and standards that you are comfortable with.
Do not try to be perfect – My initial goal was to have a perfect podcast even though I had never done one before and perfect is such a variable term. I should have realized that was unattainable as I am an SAP consultant not a professional speaker and Steve is an SAP consultant not a podcast producer. It was interesting as after we recorded the podcast I replayed some of my answers in my mind and actually sent Steve an email recommending that we do it over. We never did as once I had a chance to listen to it I was pleasantly surprised and although not every answer was articulated exactly how I would have liked I was happy with the overall product. It was a good lesson in not sweating the small stuff as hopefully anyone listening will be more interested in the content and not a short gap here and there when I needed to collect my thoughts.
The three learning’s above are broadly applicable across SAP and I would encourage everyone to step outside of their comfort zone and answer a SCN forum question, write a blog, do a podcast or speak at an industry event as trust me you will be happy that you did.
All in all I was happy with how the podcast turned out and already looking forward to doing my next.
