A few months ago, Shengtao Tan asked if I could help him with the receipt and posting of dashboard samples from community members in China. These would be for a contest modeled on the Xcelsius Challenge – Get ready to be amazed! from earlier this year where the community voted for their favorite dashboards by posting their ratings.
The response was great and over 40 dashboards were sent (albeit most at the last minute).
What was really challenging was that the majority of submissions arrived with Chinese titles, descriptions and author names. Despite having spent a few months working in Wuhan, China (Great food: try the Hot/Dry Noodles!) where I learned the rudiments of the Chinese language, receiving these dashboards and then posting them to the overview page required a fair amount of concentration. There was also the occasional correspondence in Chinese via Google Translate with contributors for updates and fixes too.
Yet, all in all, the results speak for themselves. The SAP Business Intelligence Dashboard Design Competition Entries page now displays a wide variety of interesting dashboard sample covering a range of business intelligence data. (Tip: I open the page in Chrome to use the built-in translate feature to understand the Chinese descriptions.)
Some of my favorite submissions are those that display state level information on a map of China. They really put into perspective the size of these companies and diversity they deal with operating across China: a large nation made up of over 20 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities, each with their own distinct flavor! (Just imagine all the diversity found in Europe and USA across all the nations and states!) Here’s a good example from Retail Channel:
