Using Excel charts to display MII data

MS Excel has always been the choice for data display. Every now and then we need excel sheets to do some sort of data operation. MII has its own capabilities of fetching data from various resources. This post is about displaying data from MII in Excel. It is easier than I thought of.I’m using 11.5 in this example but later versions can be used by changing the query URL. Prerequisite for this post is to have knowledge of MII and excel as I’m not going to get into details of the basic operations.

  • Create a query with some data in it. Here, I’m using tag simulator and extracting current AssetUtil(1,2,3,4) values.
  • Now open MSExcel. In a new sheet, goto Data -> Import External Data -> New Web Query .IN the address box, give the appropriate URL for your query template. It should be something like

  • Click on import twice and then press OK. Data will be fetched from MII and displayed in excel.
  • Now you can use your excel charting skills to develop the chart in excel using the data you just got.

Tip: Write a small macro to refresh your data  using Sheet1.QueryTables(1).Refresh. Then assign a shortcut key for you macro or you can even use a timer for automatic refreshes.
