SAP Business ByDesign level of maturity

SAP Business ByDesign level of maturity

I were wondering about the SaaS concepts for SAP Business ByDesign, especially which maturity level SAP Business ByDesign has. In this blog I will try to find the answer to the question:

Which maturity level does SAP Business ByDesign have?

SAP Business ByDesign

First I will give an introduction on the product. SAP is offering a SaaS product called SAP Business ByDesign. This service is provided via het internet and the actual data and IT infrastructure resides with SAP.  Business ByDesign offers the following modules and is offered for small and medium sized businesses:

  • Customer Relation Management
  • Financial Management
  • Project Management
  • Supply Chain Management
  • Supplier Relationship Management
  • Human Resources Management
  • Executive Management Support
  • Compliance Management

SaaS concept

Second I will give an introduction to SaaS. SaaS is an acronym for Software as Service. This is related to software which is not hosted locally but at a third party organization. Basicly SaaS is an application used by customers via the internet and hosted by a third party.

SaaS level of maturity

Level 1 Ad-hoc/custom: Each tenant has its own customized version of the hosted application.

Level 2 Configurable : The vendor is hosting separated instances of the application for each tenant. All tenants are using the same code implementation and the customer is able to customize the system to their needs.

Level 3 Configurable, multi-tenant: The vendor is hosting one instance for all tenants. Authority and security checks ensure that data is kept separated for each customer. The customer is able to do customizing on the system.

Level 4 Scalable, configurable, multi-tenant: This level adds scalability by separating the processes of the presentation, application processing, and the data management (multitier architecture). The vendor can change capacity to match the demand by changing the amount of servers without changing the software.

I will form a conclusion on the search until so far and keep in mind the following things: scalability, configuration and muti-tenant.

This point I could not answer really because of lack of documentation on the architecture.

When searching the web I found a nice youtube film which shows how to do some customizing in the CRM Module of Business By Design:

Basicly the configuration is by adding modules like CRM, HM etc. It’s also possible to add some new custom fields. But that’s about it.

SAP Business By Design is multi tenant a nice video on that topic is shown here:

So finally I could definitely say that SAP Business ByDesign has reached at least level 3 of the SaaS maturity level. I still have questions on the scalability and this is being fed by the lack of documentation on the scalability part.

Last thing, when people are looking for an overview of what SAP Business ByDesign can do and just want to sit back and relax, they can watch this video
