Today’s Postal Bulletin contains 10 pages of Labeling List changes, but the rest of the material does not appear to affect Presort. The Labeling List updates are in theory effective today, June 17, and required by August 19 – at least, that’s what the Postal Bulletin text says. Doubt enters in here because if you look at the online DMM, you’ll see the tables there were updated as of June 7, or 10 days before today’s supposed effective date!
This has certainly caused a number of headaches, since the data in our supplied directories has not included the changes that weren’t yet officially announced. For example, this has caused questioning of container labels that in theory should be fine until August 19 because they didn’t match the online DMM. There seems to be no way to “go back” with the online DMM, short of going to the previous major version, and in these cases going back that far is not really helpful. But with any luck, those labeling issues will settle back down, now that the official change notification has been published.
However, an additional thing to watch is that there seem to be some data differences between the Postal Bulletin entries and what was delivered in the electronic version of the directory information. It doesn’t seem to be anything too major or widespread, just that in some cases Bing tells me there may be a discrepancy between the two data sources (that’s our directory guru Bing, not the “discovery engine”). It almost seems like the Postal Bulletin entries are being entered manually, rather than transferred from the electronic directory data – remember the recent “Altanta” (‘L’ and ‘T’ switched) city name SNAFU in the Postal Bulletin data?
Oh, and remember that “disentangling” I mentioned a few posts ago, about problems between the drop ship and labeling tables? Latest info there, as of Tuesday this week (6/15), is that the USPS is “discussing some initial changes that may be incorporated in the August publication.” Not sure where that leaves you for the next 2 months.
In any case, today’s directory updates will be in our July directory update.
