ALM functionality teaser #9 Maintenance Optimizer (MOPZ)

Maintenance Optimizer (MOPZ)

Implementing Support Packages, Enhancement Packs and patches has become a regular task in my landscape. We have relied on the Maintenance Optimizer (MOPZ) since Solution Manager 7.0 SP9 as a central tool for managing the application of regular maintenance across the entire SAP landscape.

Now with solution Manager SP22, the MOPZ has been greatly improved in the following areas:-

  • WebDynpro user interface for better look and feel;

  • Simplified Guided Procedure is now more explicit and less ambiguous;

  • Integrated Application Logs, Traces, and Stack files help avoid errors; and

  • Closer integration with the download basket.

The SAP MOPZ process.

The old way.

In the old days, the Basis support staff had to navigate through the Software Download Centre (SWDC) and find all associated files. This practice was often time consuming and error prone, as you would often forget to take a plug in or obscure update files for various add in products.

My SWDC display has over 10 pages of components, making the manual selection of maintenance binaries very time consuming and error prone.

The new way.

The MOPZ simplifies the process of downloading maintenance for all the systems in your landscape by providing an intuitive guided procedure. The following screen shots were taken during my recent download experience for Solution Manager SP23.

Setting up your MOPZ will require accurate system definitions in SMSY and some IMG work to set up. This work should take around 1-2 hours as a one time investment.

Apart from being mandatory, once configured, the MOPZ will speed up the download of Support Packs and guarantee the best outcome when applying Enhancement Packs. As the most current maintenance is critical to keep my systems running properly and attractive to new projects, it makes sense to safeguard the download process by implementing the latest MOPZ toolset available.

      There is a lot of overlap between these two approaches (e.g., see
      Test Drive: Software Lifecycle Manager). Do anyone happen to know if there is a change in direction by SAP?
