The SAP NetWeaver IDM Virtual Directory Server (VDS) is an integral part of SAP NetWeaver Identity Management (IDM). While there is an SAP Education course for the Identity Center (course code: TZNWIM), there is not an equivalent course for the Virtual Directory Server. To fill this knowledge gap this blog introduces e-learnings for the Virtual Directory Server version 7.1 that are available on SDN.

The SAP NetWeaver Identity Management 7.1 (IDM 7.1) main page on SDN is http://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/sdn/nw-identitymanagement. The Virtual Directory Server (VDS) is mandatory when integrating IDM 7.1 with SAP Business Objects Access Control (GRC) and SAP Human Capital Mangement (SAP HCM). There is detailed documentation on the IDM main page (documentation link) on how to configure the VDS in these scenarios. However the VDS can be used in a number of other scenarios and use cases. The e-learnings below provide online training on how to use the VDS in various scenarios.

The first VDS e-learning is an overview presentation with the title “Identity Virtualization with SAP NetWeaver IDM Virtual Directory Server”. The e-learning details the challenges organizations face which can be overcome by using the VDS, the VDS architecture, and the complex operations and use cases that can be addressed with the VDS.

The overview presentation e-learning can be found here: http://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/scn/elearn?rid=/library/uuid/40d37eb1-b51f-2d10-ccac-e7ea4d5521f4

The second VDS e-learning goes step-by-step through setting up a new configuration. The VDS configuration can be very quick and easy by using pre-configured templates, however this e-learning builds up a new configuration from scratch so that you can learn the detailed setup. Included in the e-learning are how-to:

  1. Create a new configuration
  2. Setup user groups and rules
  3. Build a virtual tree
  4. Configure VDS logging
  5. Add an LDAP data source
  6. Add a database connection
  7. Add an ObjectClass
  8. Configure Attribute Manipulation
  9. Create a Multi Search Group

The e-learning can be opened here: http://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/scn/elearn?rid=/library/uuid/c0b6f2f7-b51f-2d10-13b7-884e5ca63fb6

The third e-learning discusses how to extend IDM 7.1 by building a new connector. SAP NetWeaver IDM 7.1 provides extensive out-of-the-box delivered connectors. It is also possible to build a connector if none of the delivered connectors support your requirements. This e-learning outlines an example of how to create a connector, the methods to use, and how to connect VDS to Identity Center.
