Step by Step procedure for applying Oracle Interim Patches

This is my
first SCN Blog Post. Very inspired by the SAP Mentors and the rich content they
provide and sharing their learning experience.

This is a step-by-step procedure to apply Oracle Interim Patches.

Please check in Service Market Place (SMP) for the latest patches that are
tested and recommended by SAP and even check whether they are applicable for
your version of Oracle.

Below are the step performed on the landscape that I work on. Primary
(Production) system with multiple instances of SAP running on it and a DR
system for the Primary.

Oracle version:

Operating system: AIX

Below steps are quite self explanatory. If you are performing this activity for

For Primary:
Procedure to stop the DR System:

Use the below commands:

Login to the DR System:

orasid> sqlplus “/as sysdba”

SQL > recover managed standby database cancel;

SQL > shutdown

lsnrctl stop


Create file .lock.brb in /oracle/SID/sapbackup and /oracle/SID/saparch to
prevent backup interfering

touch .lock.brb

Ensure to remove .lock.brb and .lock.bra after you start database
finally/completion of steps

Apply Interim patches
tail $SAPDATA_HOME/saptrace/background/alert_$.log

Rerun oracle Statistics

Creating dictionary statistics as per note: Note 838725 – Oracle Database 10g:
New database statistics

    brconnect -u / -c -f stats -t oradict_stats

      1. Creating Oracle system statistics using brconnect

    brconnect -u / -c -f stats -t system_stats
