How I broke – and fixed – Adobe LiveCycle Designer 8.1

I learned a lesson: While cleaning house in “My Documents”, I didn’t know what the folder “My Fragments” was for so I deleted it.

Turns out it is required by Adobe Livecycle Designer 8.1, which SAP licensed and is one of the optional developer tools for SAPGUI and Netweaver Developer Studio. Deleting “My Fragments” caused my SAPGUI to lock up whenever I tried to open an Adobe Form.  When I clicked in it, a SAPGUI popup said “Server Busy:  This action cannot be completed because the other program is busy.  Choose ‘Switch To’ to activate the busy program and correct the problem.”  Neither ‘Switch To’ or ‘Retry’ got me out of the loop – I had to log in again and kill my first session.

Executing C:\Program Files\Adobe\Designer 8.1\FormDesigner.exe directly showed that it could not open …\My Documents\My Fragments.

Fragments are new (“preview”) in 8.1 and are not supported by SAP.

Uninstalling and reinstalling did not fix it. I had to:

Create a new “My Fragments” folder

Execute C:\Program Files\Adobe\Designer 8.1\FormDesigner.exe

Go to menu option Edit–>Fragments–>Create Fragment…

Create new fragment library …\My Documents\My Fragments\Fragment1.xdp

Searching Adobe’s site, I found this note:  That suggests it may also work to move folder C:\Documents and Settings\{user}\Application Data\Adobe\Designer to another location (like C:\Temp,) which would force Designer to re-initialize all its settings.  I haven’t tried that yet.

  • Hello,
I can understand this was just a mistake, but… by the way… you have any experience with using fragments in LCD?
    Have a nice day, Otto
  • No I haven’t experimented with Fragments.  SAP disables the menu options when ALD is embedded in SAPGUI, and some Adobe documents I saw refer to them as a ‘preview’, new in 8.1.
  • Hi Eric,
Even I did the same mistake by deleting the My Fragments folder and now I couldn’t open the Layout in SFP transaction. I am currently using ALD 8.2 and when I try to execute the FormDesigner.exe file mentioned by you , it doesn’t start up.
Please suggest me what do on this.
    • I wonder how exactly do you use 8.2. Maybe I am missing something here, but as far as I know, 8.2 is not released by SAP as a SAP GUI add-on. If I have missed the news, please point me to the source for both download and the documentation. Or better…to the SAP Note talking about the 8.2. Otherwise I must say that is not a good idea to use 8.2 along with SAP.
      • I stumbled upon note 1359778 which gives download & install instructions for Adobe LiveCycle Designer 8.2.  It says it can be used with ADS versions:
        – NetWeaver 7.0 ehp 1
        – NetWeaver 7.0 ehp 2
        – NetWeaver 7.1 ehp 1
        – NetWeaver 7.2

Unfortunately, our ADS is only NetWeaver 7.0.

    • Hi Eric,
The FormDesigner.exe file started working up now and I fixed the issue with the procedure mentioned by you. Thanks for your excellent blog.
