If you have no idea what SAP Event Management then I suggest you read a few blogs before getting started:

There are various options for deploying SAP Event Event management in your environment. To summarize they are as follows:

  • As part of an SCM installation
  • As an add-on to SAP AII, TM or SNC
  • As an add-on to SAP ERP 6.0

Each of these options are described in more detail below.

OPTION 1 - A built in module available in SAP SCM

This is the original option made available back in 2004 when SAP Event Management was launched under the name of Supply Chain Event Management (SCEM). At that stage SAP believe it filled the need of the global need for SCEM and would apply only to supply chain processes. As time went on SAP realized that SAP EM was also very relevant for other processes as well so the deployment options expanded, but first lets discuss this one...

In the figure below you can see that the SAP EM functionality resides on the SAP SCM 7.0 server. It then has its interfaces to SAP NetWeaver PI and BI for process integration and analytical reporting functionality respectively. In addition it integrates with the Application Interface on SAP ERP 6.0 or any other SAP system.

Note: SAP EM is available all the way back to SAP SCM 4.0 and the SAP EM application interface is available on most SAP components including SAP 4.6C. I.e. you can easily send Event Messages and create Event Handlers in SAP Event Management from a SAP 4.6C system if you have the SAP 4.6C SCEM basis plug-in installed.

OPTION 2 - As an optional add-on

In the figure below you can see that the SAP EM functionality sits on the SAP component server. It then has its interfaces to SAP NetWeaver PI and BI for process integration and analytical reporting functionality respectively. This SAP component server can be one of the following:

  • SAP Auto-ID Infrastructure (AII)
  • SAP Supply Network Collaboration (SNC)
  • SAP Transportation Management (TM)

OPTION 3 - SAP EM as an Add-On to SAP ERP 6.0

In the figure below you can see that the SAP EM functionality sits on the SAP ERP 6.0 server itself. It then has its interfaces to SAP NetWeaver PI and BI for process integration and analytical reporting functionality respectively.

With this option there is no need for the traditional SAP SCM server serving as the SAP Event Management system. SAP ERP 6.0 can serve as both the Application System and Event Management simultaneously.

The descriptions of each of the options as well as the diagrams are referenced from the book "SAP Event Management - SAP's best kept secret".
