Updates on BRFplus

BRFplus in NW 7.0 Enhancement Package 2

In the last months, the BRFplus team was working hard to finalize the next release of BRFplus. It is shipped with NW 7.0 Enhancement Package (EhP) 2. Dozens of customers, partners, and internal testers gave us a tough time in the first two months of this year. However, it was also a sweet time because of the very positive feedback we have received so far. There is a big pipeline of customers eagerly waiting to participate in the NW/Suite ramp-up and to use the new release of BRFplus.

BRFplus Adoption

BRFplus is now implemented in many SAP applications such as:

  • CRM (Loyalty Management, Territory Management, Real-time Offer Management)
  • Public Sector (Entitlement Calculation, Benefit Decision Making Process, Grantor Management, Tax and Revenue Management)
  • AMI (Rule-Based Event Management)
  • Business ByDesign (50+ use cases)

Several further scenarios are in the pipeline for 2010.

Customer and Partner Tests in 2009

Throughout 2009, we had several weeks of testing in different locations. Customers and partners tested development versions of BRFplus to learn about BRFplus capabilities and how to use it for their use cases. Also, they gave us important feedback at a very early stage, which helped us to include it into the development of the 7.0 EhP 2 release.

Invitation to test BRFplus in 2010

We want to continue with early testing by customers and partners. With this blog, I would like to invite anybody who is interested to send an email to me. We plan to have several tester seats in the SAP offices. The final dates and locations will be discussed with the interested parties.

BRFplus in NW 7.0 Enhancement Package 3

BRFplus developments in 2010 will be part of NW 7.0 EhP 3. The most important theme of this development phase is usability. We are currently in the process to create some architecture papers and finalize the plans for this release. Now, we also have support by a professional usability expert. In addition to the countless smaller usability improvement the following topics are on the list:

  • Mass change UIs
  • Improved Search
  • Hot Keys
  • Improvements in the message area and message output
  • Drag and Drop everywhere
  • Improvements in simulation and testing
  • Rule Flows (as known from NW BRM)
  • Additional configuration options
  • Usage of Flash Islands (formula, rule set, trees)
  • Attaching documents to BRFplus objects (link to Knowledge Warehouse)

Please note that this list does not contain any form of commitment or guarantee. It may happen that priorities change, problems during implementation restrain us from releasing a feature, or we just do not get it all done in time. We already know today that time will not be sufficient to deliver to all request. 😉

BRF vs. BRFplus

Many customers have asked me for a comparison of BRF and BRFplus. In Business Suite 7 Enhancement Package 5, several applications embedding BRF have added the capability to use BRFplus as well. However, after having written some paragraphs, we have seen that a blog is not enough. Now you can find the comparison in SDN as a paper: About BRF and BRFplus

The BRFplus Book

I am very happy to announce that Galileo Press will release a book about BRFplus in summer 2010. You can find some first information about the book on the Galileo Press SAP Press page. Guess what? I am one of the authors of the book. I will blog about the contents in some weeks.

      Hello Carsten,

is it possible to incorpate BRFplus on UI Level into another application?

      Let's bring up an example:

I want to design an application which heavily relies on the usage of rule. BRFplus is my favorite rules engine. In the design time WD4A enviroment of my application I want to  incorpate the rule engine design time instead of having two design times.

      Thanks & Regards,

      Hi Carsten,

what do you mean by implementation in SAP application? Possiblities to trigger BRFplus rules from IMG (replace BRF in applications)? Can you clarify a little bit more?

      kind regards,

BRFplus can replace BRF. You can connect it in a similar way. However, the migration BRF to BRFplus does not work fully automated. Applications such as TRM, Social, Grantor had to be prepared for usage of BRFplus.

So you may need to wait for the application you use to be changed so that it also can work with BRFplus (if not already done).

Is it planned to support the SAP SRM 7.0 with EHP in future?

Our current Netweaver ABAP version is 7.0 Ehp1 and we are not in a position to upgrade to Ehp2 in near future. But we really want to make use of BRFPlus functionalities available as part of Ehp2 right away.

Please advise is there a way we can get only Ehp2 BRFPlus  functionalities as a patch so that we can apply to our system without impacting the Netweaver core.

There is no chance to apply a patch or something similar. However, I know some customers that run BRFplus on an other server that can be upgraded easily (e.g. solution manager) and connect ERP, CRM, etc. to this box for rules processing.

Abdul, did you ever get an answer to your question?  If so, what was the approach?

      Hi Abdul,

Was this actually possible? Can you please kindly share if you've got any solutions for this?

Short term you may consider runnning BRFplus on a separate server that you can easily upgrade (e.g. a Solution Manager system). Then connect by RFC the two systems for remote access of data and metadata and of course for the processing call itself.
Long term we plan to come up with built in support of rule deployment into remote systems. Then you would not need to do the upgrade of systems for rules processing.
