The SAP Enterprise Portal offers a mechanism called Session Release Notification (formerly called distributet session termination). This feature is used by SAP applications (Web Dynpro, ITS based applications, BSP) running inside the portal to close their sessions in case the user

  • closes the browser window
  • navigates away from the application
  • logs off

In all three cases, the SAP application is notified and can release the session. This saves resources (memory) on the server, since the session can be closed immediately (there is no need to wait for the timeout to free up the memory).

Wouldn’t it be good to have such a framework also for your own applications  integrated into the SAP portal ?

If you are interrested on how to accomplish this, look at this RIG How-To guide. It explains everything you need to know including the source code.
