ALV Filter Functionality giving DUMP

During the upgradation of the system from 4.6C to ECC, we had an Issue with the ALV’s FILTER Functionlity. On the execution of a report, ALV-GRID was displayed and when we tried to filter one of the fields, it was throwing the dump.

We were perplexed after analyzing the dump, since it was showing error with the Standard Report. We thought it might be because of some OSS note not being installed. but we didnt find any suitable Note to rectify the issue.

We checked the Filter Functionality on other fields and found that it was working fine with them. So we checked the TYPE for the field, and found that it was of STRTUCTURE type,  we changed the type to CHARACTER type and to our surprise it worked perfectly fine . 🙂 🙂

During our RnD we found that, Filter Functionality worked perfectly fine in 4.6C irrespective of the TYPE for the field .

I have found that the function module REUSE_ALV_LIST_DISPLAY has a much stricter check in ECC 6.0 then in 4.6 / 4.7 and responds to anything it does not like by dumping. For example, if you tried to pass in fields that did not exist in your table in 4.7, you may have got strange results, but not a short dump, whereas in ECC 6.0 you get a short dump. This is not really a bad thing, it forces you to clean up your code, but it means that checking custom ALV reports is important during an upgrade.
