There are 2 distinct high-level approaches one can consider when planning the deployment of the SAP BusinessObjects Explorer, accelerated version for SAP NetWeaver BW:

  1. Focus on accelerated exploration only
  2. Fit accelerated exploration into a broader Enterprise BI strategy

With the first approach your goal is to deliver accelerated exploration to business users independently from other SAP BusinessObjects BI solutions such as Xcelsius for dashboarding or Crystal Reports for enterprise reporting. A business scenario to adopt this approach would simply be when adding accelerated exploration to an existing BEx deployment in order to reach out to new business users currently underserved by BEx.

With the second approach your goal is to add the accelerated version to an SAP BusinessObjects Enterprise deployment which might already be in place or that is being deployed simultaneously. A business scenario to adopt that approach would be when considering BI as a strategic investment to enable pervasive BI to all business users in the enterprise based on the full suite of SAP BusinessObjects BI solutions. A benefit of that latter scenario is that you will share SAP BusinessObjects Enterprise services, e.g., BI user management, across all BI functions.

It is important to note that you will leverage the blade server architecture with both approaches, though. The BW Accelerator and Explorer processes will always run on the blade servers. This is a guarantee for the high performance and linear scalability Explorer users need.

The simplified high-level diagrams below show how these 2 approaches are architected:

Since the accelerated version is predicated on SAP NetWeaver BW Accelerator, it requires customers to run SAP NetWeaver 7.0.1 BW (SP2), so customers with an older version of BW will have to upgrade first.

In the table below I recap the different scenarios for different customer profiles to adopt and deploy the accelerated version:

    Hi
Thanks for the informative blog. For the accelerated version – can we export the Explorer results to any BOE or agnostic formats?

You can export exploration results from the accelerated version to Excel (csv) and as an image for re-use in PowerPoint. You can also bookmark these results to your web browser’s favorites and send a link to these results via email directly from Explorer.

The accelerated version connects directly to BWA indexes. There is no need for BEx query or any other additional layer in-between BWA and the Explorer front-end.

For the accelerated version – I understand that BusinessObjects Enterprise XIR3.x version is still required…How is that delivered — is it a preconfigured as part of the blade appliance or does it need to be separately installed and setup?

The required subset of SAP BusinessObjects Enterprise XI 3.1 capabilities is bundled with the appropriate license for the accelerated version. SAP hardware partners will preload and preconfigure the blades with this software to support the 1st deployment option which focuses on accelerated exploration. For the 2nd option which consists in adding accelerated exploration within an SAP BusinessObjects Enterprise XI 3.1
deployment already in place and/or aimed at supporting an enterprise BI strategy, the full edition of SAP BusinessObjects Enterprise software was/is of course installed separately.

Thanks Thierry. So one more question – In case of Option 2 – for an Enterprise BI strategy — will the client have to deploy use 2 different versions of polestar — or 2 different URLs to search content — the accelerated version for SAP data and the usual explorer version for Universes?

You would only deploy Explorer on blades and enable search and exploration across all data sources, i.e., SAP NetWeaver BW Accelerator direclty and other through universes, with one single entry point (URL).

Yes, you can install and run Explorer independently from BW Accelerator. This version of Explorer comes with the SAP BusinessObjects BI portfolio. This product was formerly called SAP BusinessObjects Polestar. You can test drive the user experience of Explorer on this site: http://explorerlive.ondemand.com/.

SAP BusinessObjects Polestar was renamed into SAP BusinessObjects Explorer. You can easily upgrade from v3.0 to v3.1 provided you also upgrade the complete SAP BusinessObjects Enterprise XI environment. Please go to SAP Service Market Place or contact your local SAP representative to access SAP BusinessObjects software. You can access to technical details about Explorer setting and configuration from the SAP BusinessObjects Explorer community pages on SDN: https://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/boc/explorer.
