Upgrades and Some Downtime

The SAP Community Network is powered by SAP NetWeaver and is a remarkable testimony to the flexibility and stability of the SAP NetWeaver platform.  Nevertheless, the platform continues to evolve and now it is time for us to upgrade to SAP NetWeaver 7.0 SP 17.

Our platform team will perform this major upgrade on Saturday, 28 March 2009. The upgrade will start at 8:00 A.M. CET and will result in approximately 10 hours of downtime.  All the CN communities, including SAP EcoHub will be affected.

We are sorry for any inconvenience that the downtime might cause our loyal communities. (If it is any consolation, you can be assured that many of us on the SAP Community Network team will feel bored, lost, and empty, wondering where to go and what to do with our time on that dreadful day. 😉

But even though upgrades cause downtimes, they have their advantages too, and this upgrade will bring some important benefits including better performance and improved stability of the overall platform. Additionally, the upgrade will enable us to introduce several new features that we will be rolling out in the coming weeks and months.

Please bear with us during the “dark hours” on Saturday. On Sunday the light will shine again and you can jump back in to engage with your favorite communities.

  • Just kidding. Like typical projects do you have a Sandbox > Dev > QA > Production landscape, is there Hypercare support? BTW when you say the Platform team who will actually do the upgrade - is it not only DB (David Branan) but some other team which will actually do the upgrade.
    Really appreciate giving the background.
Looking forward to upgraded version of SCN Sunday morning
    • I'm happy to announce that David Branan is not alone. Actually we have a global IT organization who are responsible for all SAP web properties, both internal and external. The server landscape is located in Germany.
Because CN is running on the SAP NetWeaver platform we do not have a "typical" website architecture. The pending upgrade to the latest SAP NetWeaver version follows the same processes that our customers use when they upgrade their productive SAP systems.
These are well-established procedures and I have a lot of confidence that CN will be up and running on Sunday.
    • Hi Somnath,

If you're interested, I can tell you all about it from the inside perspective at SAP Inside Track London on Saturday! 🙂
