On march 2, 2009 SAP announced a new broad sustainability initiative (http://www.sap.com/usa/about/SAP-sustainability/index.epx). Among other solutions Green IT is part of SAP’s sustainability offering. And Green IT – which for SAP is mainly about minimizing the energy footprint of SAP solutions – goes hand in hand with my favorite topic: virtualization.
I assume that all of you have at least a basic knowledge about virtualization, what it is and which are the major players (ever heard of a company called VMware? 🙂 ). Well, but many of you maybe wonder what SAP is doing in this area and why we actually are actively working on virtualization anyway. Because at the end of the day SAP is an enterprise application vendor, we are not selling virtualization products like VMware, Microsoft, Novell, HP, Sun, IBM and all our other partners of the virtualization ecosystem. But allow me to say that we are by far the enterprise application vendor with the best virtualization strategy,
We support a large variety of virtualization solutions and products, in collaboration with our partners. In addition we offer a virtualization framework with adaptive computing which comes with SAP NetWeaver (You can find all details about this here on SCN at https://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/sdn/virtualization). Last but not least we work together with our partners to offer a large variety of scenarios and best practices how to optimize the characteristics of SAP solutions in virtualized environments.
The SAP Virtualization Week 2009 is about all these topics.
On April 20-22, 2009 customers, partners and SAP colleagues will meet for the third time (after 2007 and 2008) at the SAP Co-Innovation Lab in Palo Alto to learn
- how customers use virtualization in their SAP landscapes, what is working well, where they still see painpoints and which functions and features they would see in the future,
- which virtualization products and technologies are offered by our partners
- and how SAP’s virtualization strategy does look like.
You can find the complete event information at www.sapvirtualizationweek2009.com.
Look at the agenda (three days with 25 sessions on April 20,21 and 22), and you can see that we have invited Graybar, T-Systems, Tarkett EE, Honeywell, University Munich, IBM and the City of San Diego as customers to tell us and our guests about their experience with virtualized SAP solutions. From a partner perspective these sessions cover various technologies from hardware-assisted to server virtualization. Over the next couple of weeks i will write additional blogs talking more about the details of the agenda and the sessions.
Before i finish this blog for today let me to talk about one important part of our event, the live broadcast. I know that 2009 is a very tough year for all of us. Strict travel restrictions are in place everwhere. But to offer to all of you to participate in our event we run a live broadcast in parallel to the onsite event at the SAP Co-Innovation Lab. I am happy that Citrix will sponsor this with GoToWebinar. I will talk about more details in one the next blogs, but bascially we will run a 3 days x 8 hours multimdia-enabled webinar, including collaboration functionalities, chat modes, etc.
Stay tuned for more information about the SAP Virtualization Week 2009 next week.
