Those who know that the new release of SAP NetWeaver Process Integration, SAP NetWeaver PI 7.1 is generally available since July this year, might have in mind already what is new in it.
As an overview, we had already published the SAP NetWeaver PI 7.1 overview presentation some time ago in SDN.
Since we got already several questions about how the one and other new feature really works and what are the details about it, check the following list.
It contains the most important new features of SAP NetWeaver PI 7.1 with a link to the corresponding chapter where the function is described in the SAP library.
Repository-based Modeling and Design
Key enhancements are the Enterprise Services Repository, the central repository that is the heart of your SOA landscape, and the Services Registry, the UDDI V3.0-based registry for the callable services in your landscape.
In the Enterprise Services Repository, the following new key functions are available for the design time.
- Enhanced modeling Support
Besides the process integration scenarios, that were available already in earlier releases of SAP NetWeaver PI and which are still supported, a new modeling environment is available. It allows the creation of various different model types allowing for different views on your process landscape.
The Modeling guide describes the new model types and the concept behind them and which use cases they cover.
- Service Interfaces
Service interfaces evolved out of the message interfaces. Service interfaces have several new features, like, for example, the support for different interface pattern and the option to create service interfaces with different operations.
- Mapping enhancements
In the mapping area, there are several enhancements. These are some of the most important ones:
You can use SAP PI 7.1 Mapping Enhancements Series: Using Graphical Variable during mapping design.
Mapping developers can use their own user-defined functions in message mappings in addition to the standard functions. The ES Builder saves these functions in a local function library of the message mapping. In lower releases, you were able to save and manage user-defined functions as part of one message mapping only. You can now create function libraries independently of specific message mappings, and can use the functions you define in them in multiple message mappings.
Correcting Structural Inconsistencies
You can repair mappings after structure changes are introduced to an involved data type.
To get the complete picture, read the mapping chapter in the SAP NetWeaver PI 7.1 Release Notes or the SAP NetWeaver Process Integration 7.1: Mapping Enhancements Blog Series.
- Enhancements for integration processes (ccBPM)
Service Bus-based Integration
SAP NetWeaver PI 7.1 provides already key capabilities of an Enterprise Service Bus. In SAP NetWeaver PI 7.1, Web services standards are supported.
- Support for Web Services Reliable Messaging (WS-RM)
SAP NetWeaver PI 7.1 supports several standards related to Web Services. You can connect Web service provider and consumer to the Integration Server by configuring a communication channel with adapter type WS (in the Integration Directory). Also the direct (point-to-point) connection between Web service providers and consumers based on an AS ABAP 7.1 back-end systems can be configured centrally in the Integration Directory (direct connection).
- WS Security
- Principal propagation using SAML standard (see also the Principal Propagation with SAP NetWeaver Process Integration 7.1)
- XML validation allows you to check the structure of a message payload.
The following new functions enable you to increase performance of message throughput considerably:
- Local message processing in Advanced Adapter Engine (AAE)
Using this option, message Processing is only executed on the AAE from one adapter to another without the involvement of the Integration Engine. You can gain a great improvement in performance. The AAE supports simple routing and mapping, however, no content-based routing yet. Configuring message processing on the AAE is also straightforward by using only one configuration object in the Integration Directory, the integrated configuration.
- Message packaging
You can group together asynchronous messages in packages and then processing each message package.
- SAP NetWeaver Administrator is the central tool for administration and monitoring, offering a central entry point to the whole SAP NetWeaver system landscape. It paves the way towards central configuration and administration.
- Changes in the Integration Directory (configuration tool)
Note that this list is not complete and lists only new key functions. For a complete list of the new features, check the Release Notes for SAP NetWeaver PI 7.1.
Note that SAP enhancement package 1 for SAP NetWeaver PI 7.1 is already at the horizon, ramp-up will start end of this year. Therefore, in the near future, we will provide some more insight into the new features that will be provided by SAP enhancement package 1 for SAP NetWeaver PI 7.1. Stay tuned!
