Updating Netweaver ABAP and JAVA stacks in parallel

This article was written to reach dual stack NetWeaver 7.0 owners, who are about to update their systems. Depending on the number of software components and applications you run on top of NetWeaver, an update procedure can be a quick or time consuming task.

After questions about dual-stack updates were brought to SAP by our customers, we validated a shorter procedure for updating the ABAP and Java stacks of a Netweaver system in parallel. The new approach consists of the following steps:

1) We recommend that prior to applying ABAP and Java Support Packages, you use the “Single Support Packages” option in JSPM and select for update only the components SAP KERNEL and BC-FES-IGS.

2) Import the Support Packages for component SAP_BASIS into the ABAP stack using the ABAP Support Package Manager (SPAM).

3) Import the remaining ABAP Support Packages with SPAM and, in parallel, apply the Java Support Package Stack with JSPM.

Why do we recommend this new approach?
Because with the parallel update procedure, system downtime is reduced by half compared to downtime for applying ABAP and Java stacks successively.

Please check Support Package Stack guide for Netweaver 7.0 (SPS17) for further details.
