I have finally received the updated second Edition of the SAP Press Book Java Programming with SAP NetWeaver from Amazon.de. I was eager to use the samples and tutorials to get a better Feeling on using SAP’s Application Server Java for development.
I was able to install the Eclipse based NetWeaver Development Studio from the Book’s DVD on my Windows XP. However the InstallAnywhere based Installer for the Composition Environment (SAP NetWeaver AS Java) failed with “Serious Errors”:
Digging into the logfile it was clear to me that setting up some Windows Permissions for MaxDB failed. And this is related to the fact, that System Groups on Windows have localized names.
It is quite annoying that the installer was not giving better help or can ignore that step. I dont have a english XP handy so I was stuck. A Co-Worker of mine with a multi lingual XP was able to install it. From my own experience I know it is hard to support the multiple Versions, Editions and Languages of Windows. But I did not expect that SAP takes the easy way out (by only supporting one system language).had the same problem for SR3 and the Book Trial.
But there is hope: if you instead download “SAP NetWeaver Composition Environment 7.1 SR5 Trial” from SDN, it will work on Windows XP. It is based on SAPInst and will give you a nice warning report, that your system groups have the wrong name, but the installation will succeed.
The Sap-Note 362379 re-iterates that there should be no problem, but you are on your own if you install SAP Server components on localized Windows.
