In How To Tackle an Upgrade (4): Implementing Strategic Enhancements of this series, I focused on the third step of the upgrade approach – the evolvement towards enterprise SOA. Today I will discuss which services can assist you in the planning phase of your upgrade project.

The Global Upgrade Office supports customers with the following services that are published in the SAP Global Upgrade Services Portfolio:

Based on customer feedback and my own experiences, I know that the quick upgrade analysis for SAP ERP and the quick upgrade evaluation for SAP ERP are the two most important services for customers in the plan phase.

Quick upgrade analysis for SAP ERP

This service is designed to get you started with an upgrade assessment. It provides a high-level savings estimate as well as an estimate of the project’s ROI, an assessment of the upgrade complexity (giving specific information on the level of modifications in your solution), an effort estimate for each phase of the upgrade project, and a sample project plan. The target audience of this service is CEOs and CFOs as well as IT managers.

The approach of such a service looks as follows:

  1. Questionnaire is filled out by customer;
  2. Remote analysis is performed and a standard report is created using SAP analytical and estimate tools;
  3. Validation and remote restitution of the results are performed by a SAP-trained consultant who can also outline the next steps for the realization of the upgrade project.

This service is delivered remotely with an estimated delivery duration of about one week with an effort of three person days.

Quick upgrade evaluation for SAP ERP

This service allows you to evaluate your upgrade project by combining a remote analysis and a two-day on-site workshop that covers a cost estimate, an estimate of effort required, and a milestone plan for executing your upgrade project. The service results in a “decision document” that can serve as a foundation for a fixed-price SAP proposal for technical upgrade execution.

Important to know that planning such a service requires that the customer is on a start release between SAP R/3 4.0B and mySAP ERP 2004.

The target audience of this service includes CFOs and CIOs as well as project leads, basis teams, application champions and developers.

The approach of such a service is as follows:

  • 1. Remote system analysis
  • 2. Onsite workshops (2 days) incl. knowledge transfer, upgrade planning & interviews
  • 3. Results presentation

Regarding the delivery format for this service, you can choose between remote and onsite. The estimated delivery duration is three weeks at the minimum.
