Crystal Reports 2008 PowerTweak #2 – Skinning the Report Designer

All of us like looking at pretty pictures. New to Crystal Reports 2008, you can (unofficially) customize your Crystal Reports Designer so your main page is a relaxing autumn setting or a photo of your favorite vacation spot.

Crystal Reports with a Custom Skin

To do this, look in the helpfully named directory C:\Program Files\Business Objects\BusinessObjects Enterprise 12.0\win32_x86\Start Page\en . Replace the last \en with your language code of choice.

There are two key files: start.html and offlinestart.html. start.html is used when CR detects Internet connectivity   offlinestart.html is used when there is no Internet connectivity.

Open start.html in your favority HTML editor and change the HTML and Javascript however you want (such as redirecting to your favorite page).

Sample Start Page
I’ve attached a simple start.zip (containing start.html) that modifies my own Crystal Reports 2008 Start Page to look like the image above. Put the replacement start.html into C:\Program Files\Business Objects\BusinessObjects Enterprise 12.0\win32_x86\Start Page\en. It’ll set the background to any photo you have at C:\Photos\CRBackground.bmp.

When you’re looking through the HTML, there’s a helpful Javascript function called generateMRUTableItems() that generates the list of Most Recently Used Reports. I’d recommend keeping that function somewhere in the page.

Note: This feature is not officially supported and might not work in future releases. Installing a service pack will have a side effect of wiping out these customizations, so make sure you create a backup of your changes!

Have fun!
