SAP NetWeaver 7.0 – Java and ABAP Trial Version on Linux – VMware Edition – Tips & Tricks

On Monday last week I received an email from Brian Bischof asking for help with the SAP NetWeaver 7.0 – Java and ABAP Trial Version on Linux – VMware Edition. I had already tried to install this software around New Year but struggled with the download of SLES10 SP1 SAP Version  (Where to download SLES10 SP1 SAP Version?) and also a problem with the License Key  (License Key for SAP NW 7.0 – Java Trial Version on Linux – VMware Edition). Brian’s mail triggered me to try it again.

Update: If you are looking for instructions for the “SAP NetWeaver 7.0 – Java Trial Version on Linux – VMware Edition” please read the  “Getting Started Guide” which was just published.

1 Download & Extract

I’ve downloaded all the files from SDN, SLES 10 SAP version from Novell and VMWare Player  (http://www.vmware.com/download/player/). Here is a screenshot of all the required Files:

image

I’ve created a sub-folder Readme where I’ve extracted the “VmWare%20ABAP%20and%20Java%20Readme%20-%20zipfile.rar” – File. The VMware-player-2.0.3-80004.exe has to be installed as an Administrator. After the VMWare Player installation you have to reboot yur computer. After that I’ve double-clicked the “SAP NetWeaver 70 – Java and ABAP VMware Trial.part01.rar”-File and opened it with WinRAR  (http://www.rarlab.com/). I’ve extracted all the content to the VMWare sub-folder I’ve created before. Please be patient, for me that took about 20 minutes. Then I’ve extracted “SLES10SP1VSAP.rar” also to “VMWare”. Again you have to wait some minutes.

The resulting structure in the folder VMWare looks like this:

image

image

2 Start-up & Login

Now you can double-click on the File “SLES10SP1_Test_Drive.vmx” to start the virtual machine. At this first start you have to answer this dialog with “I copied it”:

image

The boot process will start automatically. After some seconds you will see the boot screen:

image

If you want to see what the system is doing in the background you can click into the VMWare window and press ALT + F2. Then the startup console is displayed:

image

After the system has booted you can logon with Username “root” (lower-case) and the Password “sap123”:

image

3 Install license

3.1 Get hardware key

The SAP Application server is not started automatically. Fist you have to start the “Gnome Terminal” to get a command-line. Please be aware that the keyboard layout is set to “German”. I’ve described how to change that to “English” in Chapter “5.2 Keyboard layout”.

image

There you can switch your user-id to using the command “su – n4sadm”.

image

According to the Documentation in the Readme we have to determine the Hardware Key of our system by submitting the command “/usr/sap/N4S/SYS/exe/run/saplicense -get”

image

Now goto http://www.sap.com/minisap/  (http://www.sap.com/minisap/) where you can apply for a 90-day license. Fill all the required fields and the system info:

image

Some minutes later you will receive a mail with the attached license-key text file.

3.2 Start-up the Application Server

To install the license we have to start-up the Application server. Do that using the command “startsap n4shost” after a while you will get the message, that the Instance was started:

image

If you encounter an error saying “Database is not running” during this process try the command “db2start” before you use “startsap n4shost”.

3.3  Prepare license file for import

Now you can minimize the Terminal window to see the desktop. To import the license we have to create an empty file on the desktop by a right-click:

image

Name the file “N4S.txt” as the attachment of you license key mail:

image

Double-click on the “N4S.txt” file on the virtual machines desktop to open it. Open the “N4S.txt” attached to you license key mail and copy the content to the clipboard. Paste the content into the editor:

image

Don’t forget to save the “N4S.txt” file.

3.4 Install license

Now double-click on the SAPGUI icon on the desktop.

image

Choose the N4S system from the list and start the connection by clicking on “Connect”:

image

Logon as user “sap*” with password “sapn4sadm”:

image

Start the transaction “SLICENSE”:

image

Click on the Button “New Licenses”:

image

Then click the import button:

image

Open the “Desktop” folder in the “Open” dialog:

image

Choose the “N4S.txt” file:

image

When you’ve done that you should get a sucess message:

image

That was the final step. Now logoff and logon as user “developer” with password “developer”.

4 Access the system

4.1 Java Stack

To access the Java Stack of the server you have to use a Web-Browser and access

. When you’ve just installed the license you first have to restart the application server by issuing the command “stopsap n4shost” and “startsap n4shost” from the command-line as user “n4shost”.

4.2 ABAP Stack

If you want to connect to the ABAP Stack from an external system you can use this settings for SAP GUI:

!https://weblogs.sdn.sap.com/weblogs/images/2345/09-connection-from-windows-SAPNetWeaver7.0-Java-ABAPTrialVersionLinuxVMwareEdition.png|height=1|alt=|width=1|src=https://weblogs.sdn.sap.com/weblogs/images/2345/09-connection-from-windows-SAPNetWeaver7.0-Java-ABAPTrialVersionLinuxVMwareEdition.png|border=0!

To lookup the IP address of the Application Server (Anwendungsserver) you can use the terminal window as user root and issue the “ifconfig”-command:

The IP address is displayed behind “inet addr:”. You can download SAP GUI for Windows and Java from ftp://ftp.sap.com/pub/sapgui/.

5 Troubleshooting

5.1 Proxy configuration

If you want to access the Internet from inside the virtual machine, you have to reconfigure the proxy settings. Unfortunately they are set for SAP internal use. So if you want to access your license key e-mail via the browser you have to change this settings. Start Firefox:

image

Click Edit > Preferences > Advanced Tab > Settings button. Choose ‘Direct connection to the internet’ if you’re using the virtual machine at home behind a NAT-router. In a corporate environment you have to ask your friendly network support guy’s to provide you the right configuration. Also you can look it up from your actual browser you use to read this blog.

image

5.2 Keyboard layout

Unfortunately they keyboard in the virtual machine is set to a german keyboard layout. To change this in the SuSE Linux Enterprise Server you have to use the YaST configuration tool:

image

Click on the Group “System”. There you will find the “Keyboard Layout”. You have to double-click to start the configuration.

image

From the “Layout”-list choose “U.S. English”. Click OK to apply this setting.

image

Then you have to confirm the setting by clicking “Save”

image

Please also notice the next message which indicates that you have to log-off / log-on to apply this settings.

      Hi Gregor,

i have tried to download the sneakpreview for the second time and as soon as i want to unzip it, i have problems with the 4th file as it says it is corrupt.

When did you download the sneakpreview? Maybe SAP have fixed it some weeks ago.

      Thanks for your response.

      Hello Acos Rodriguez,

when I've downloaded the files around New Year I also encountered a CRC error. But the download I've made last week is running fine.

      Hi Gregor,
Thanks for your blog however I am having difficuties in accessing SAP NetWeaver 7.0 - Java and ABAP Trial Version on Linux - VMware Edition. I have done exactly which you have stated in this blog. But it seems like I need to do more that this I believe. When I try to start sap from Command prompt of VMWare it syas failed. Now my question is do I have to extract all RAR files or only two RAR files like SLES10SP1VSAP.RAR and SAP Netweaver 70 - Java and ABAP VMWare Trial.part01.rar ? (I have extracted these 2 files only).
After extracting 2 files I clicked on SLES10SP1_Test_Drive.vmx and it runs as per your blog. But when I try to srartsap it does not. So I have to do any other steps. Please let me know the exact steps if possible. I am using Win XP Prof.

      Hi Gregor,

Thanks, you solved one of my problem with this blog.
I think the Readme file - which I read countless times - should be modified so as to integrate the content of your Webblog, or, at least, a link to your weblog.

Thanks for your help getting me up and running on the VMWare. I really appreciate it!

On Step 3.2, my copy always locks up when checking the DB2 database. Even if I do "db2start" like you mentioned, it still locks up. So I just wait till it locks up (only takes a minute) and close the Gnome terminal.  Then I open Gnome Terminal again, re-login and execute the command 'startsap n4shost' and it works great.

      Hello Gregor,

This is a very very nice blog, everything is clear here.

But I still got a problem when I’m trying to connect with GUI, I get this Error:

      Hi,

I did have the same problem.
I think this is a DNS issue. I temporarily solved it by putting an entry for ivml2005 in my hosts file.

You can use the ifconfig command in a terminal to find out what the IP is.

The best way would be to ask your administrator to configure the DNS.

      Hi,

I thought it would be no problem as it is the precise goal of virtualisation, isn't it ?
But, the Java VMWare edition seems to hang at startup ??

Could it be because of the fact that both server are named ivml2005 ?

      Many thanks in advance.

      Hi Guillaume,

this can be a problem. Have you tried to change the hostname? I can't try it here because my machine is already under very heavy load when I run only one of the editions. A great solution would be if the ABAP/Java Edition will include also the Portal. Then there will be no need to run both.

I ve installed the NetWeaver Java Trial / SUSE Linux 10 Server (VMWare Edition).
It includes a demo scenario, where a new employee needs to confirm the confidentiality aggreement in an interactive form.
When I click on this I get an internal server error 500.

The trial certificate for interactive forms and the svg viewer are installed.

Can anyone bring some light into this?
      Thanks in advance.

      Hello Deniz,

the Java/ABAP Edition contains a Dual Stack NetWeaver 7.0 installation. The full ABAP Application Server and the J2EE compliant Java Application Server. Unfortunately in this Edition in the Java Stack the Portal is missing. The Java only edition contains the J2EE Server including the NetWeaver Portal.

You can install EP +EPC into this java+abap version.

      Hi Gregor,

I've installed EPC with the (dual-stack) SAP on Linux Web AS 2004s TestDrive, see OSS note 883948.
But I needed to use VMware to guest WinXP, because for some reason (I don't know if it is unique to my setup or an SAP oversight) New System from Template and New System from PAR context-menus are missing in Linux Firefox, only present in IE.

Which brings me on to a more general point, of the desirability of a VMware dual stack installation anyway. As I see it, you can explore adequately ABAP or Java with stand-alone preview installations. The unique and compelling advantage of using the dual stack PREVIEW is that it fits onto typical hardware of 2GB RAM so then the ABAP stack can serve as a backend for Java applications. Crucially, tools like NWDS or workflow graphical display (to name just two examples) currently need a Windows client which is why you should instead use VMware to guest Windows.

      Hi Phil,

thank you for this valuable suggestion to install the Enterprise Portal Core (EPC).

What you can try when you facing problems using Firefox on Linux do an upgrade to the latest SP. SAP is working hard to support Firefox. But for details have a look at the Product Availability Matrix (PAM).

I think the same benefits as you've described in your Linux Host/XP VMWare solution can be applied to XP Host/Linux VMWare. I think the XP Host solution is used more often than the other way round.

Yes, I forgot about that. Thinking too Linux centrally 🙂  With WinXp as the host containing SAPGUI etc, it's straight forward to communicate via NAT to VMware.

When I downloaded this earlier this week, I got .tgz files instead of .rars.   I've no idea how I managed that.

I when I tried to unarchive the tgz files, 7-zip gave warnings about corrupted files.   This was enough to make me repeat the download today.   I'm getting rar files, but I'm still getting warnings from 7-zip and several other archive extract programs.   I will forge ahead anyway when the downloads are done.

      Author's profile photo Richard Gray
      Richard Gray
The download did un-rar without error and the VM came up.  (I must have not retried 7-zip on the first RAR...)

I got as far as the su - n4adm

For some reason, the '-' showed up as what looks like a greek alphabet Beta character.  I'm guessing there's a keyboard incompatibility here somewhere.   While digging in the Terminal settings, the VMware server crashed out from under me.  The console would not reconnect to the server, so I had to reboot the Windows Server 2003 R2 x64 that was hosting VMware.

This should go in an appropriate forum, shouldn't it?  (I'm *really* new here and not enjoying it at all.)

      Hello Thomas,

it is Possible to install an ERP, CRM, SCM or BI IDES System inside a Virtual Machine. But you can not enhance the SAP NetWeaver Trial Versions to a IDES System. Also the Hardware Requirements for an IDES Installation are dramatically different. I.E. for SAP CRM 2007 IDES the minimum DB Size is 75 GByte. Have a look to Note "1141838 - IDES CRM 2007". Also I think you should assign at least 4 GByte RAM to the Virtual Machine.

      Hi again,

I'm trying to change SUSE10 to a static IP address.  I've repeatedly gone into yast and configured a static address, but when I reboot, it has reverted to DHCP mode, with an address (a consistent one at least) in the DHCP pool.   Anyone else have this problem??

Although I guess I don't need to now, eventually I will want to change host/nodename because I will need two instances of SAP for BC-XOM testing.  They CAN'T both have the same IP & name...  Will changing name screw up the SAP system?

      Hello Richard
The system itself should remain unaffected when you change the physical hostname, as we have installed it using a virtual hostname (n4shost, the one you have to specify when starting up the system).
For the issue of changing the IP address the following may serve as entry point: http://listserv.sap.com/pipermail/linux.general/2004-October/004349.html

Another place to look at in order to get the complete picture is the .vmx file in your directory with the unzipped VM-files, you will find the Mac-Address of your eth0 device in here, we did have some additional requirements from our second virtual appliance (also available as download on SDN https://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/sdn/go/portal/prtroot/docs/library/uuid/7005cdbf-ba8b-2a10-81b0-ebcfe8061f8f)
If those hints still do not suffice I would have to dig down a bit deeper in my memory about what and why we did it on the network side.
I hope this still helps to point you into the right direction

      Hi Richard
Looks like I will have to further drill down on your network issue. When it comes to the VMware version: I am using the same version than you are, I haven't experienced lock-ups so far but got to admit that most of my tests are just Start and Stop exercises finished within 5 minutes or so.
You can also give VMware Player a try, or the beta you mentioned.
      Manfred
      Author's profile photo Richard Gray
      Richard Gray
I made sure Windows Update was run and updated to VMware Server 1.05.80187. (This windows machine has other VMs installed on it, so I can't try VMware Player - can't have both Player & Server installed at the same time.) I was reviewing the requirements in the index.html file and noticed that wants 2G of RAM + 4G of swap space. The system has 4G of RAM and swap is configured for 2G minimum with expansion to 4G. That should do, shouldn't it?

I again nuked the VM and reinstalled from the .rar files this evening. I fired it up and changed the keyboard to English. When I tried to exit Yast, the VM then again proceded to lock up. After some number of minutes, the VMware console lost connection to the server and would not reconnect. This time, I decided to give it a bit and after roughly 10 minutes, I was able to reconnect and was back at the Novell desktop as if nothing had happened. I was able to proceed to start SAP and install the license key. So it does seem I've made it through the install again, but the question about the instability remains. I'm not going to even attempt to mess with IP & hostname for the time being.

I think the inclusion of >>Update: If you are looking for instructions for the "SAP NetWeaver 7.0 - Java Trial Version on Linux - VMware Edition" please read the "Getting Started Guide" which was just published.<< at the top of this blog is an unnecessary confusion factor. For a while, I thought the Guide applied to THIS demo. (As a newbie, I'm somewhat tormented by the vast number of similar products and versions in info on SDN.)

Just in order to deliver the answer to the initial problem on how to switch to static IP address. As root user, open a terminal window and issue "chkconfig network-setup off"
Now you can configure your network device eth0 using Yast. Then change the ifcfg-eth0 file as suggested in the listserv thread referenced by me before.

I'm a bit confused about what source operating system I should use.
I've got hardware available with 4gig ram. I planned originally to run SLES 64bit, but is it of any use if I run VMWARE?

Thomas, you can use any operating system that supports VMWare player, so that is Windows, Linux or Mac. 4GB RAM will be ample. You don't need to run SLES 64-bit - everything you need is included in the VMware files that you have downloaded from SDN.

As I'm having difficulties getting over this (I'm a beginner), and I no one seems to know what's happening, I wonder if this could be a problem specific to this VMWare configuration ?

      Thanks for anyhelp.

1st of all, thank you this is a very helpful guide. Here is my experience.

      1. On Windows XP SP2 make sure IIS is installed, before you start.

      2. Can you insert a comment at the end of chapter 2, before getting to install license that refers to fixing the keyboard layout. Some of us only read the document after a long struggle. Stupid, but true.

      3. When connecting to system using the gui, I had an error. I then changed the connection on the GUI in the Advanced tab from conn=/H/ivml2005/S/3242 to conn=/H/127.0.0.1/S/3242

Thanking you for a fine document.

      Kind regards,

      Hi Pieter,

thank you for your comment. I've added the keyboard layout tip to the beginning of chapter 3.

Regarding your Tip: "On Windows XP SP2 make sure IIS is installed, before you start." is that rearly required for the VMWare Edition I've described here in my Blog?

      Best regards

Hi Gregor, thanks for this information. It is a great point of reference in the installing procedure.
The problem I have is that when I open SLES10SP1_Test_Drive.wmx from within VM Player 2.0.3 build-80004 I receive a warning message
      'File not found SLES10SP1_Test_Drive(2).wmdk'
I use the option to browse for it,find it, open it and receive the same response. All 17 vmdk's are in one directory, VMWare along with the .vmx

Have you experienced this or have any clues how I might rectify it?

      many thanks

      Hello Robert,

have you double-checked that the content of the directory where you've extracted the SuSE Enterprise VMWare Image + the SAP NetWeaver 7.0 Image is exactly the same as the second screenshot in chapter "1 Download & Extract"?

      Hi Gregor,

Thanks for the nice job of explaining.
I am able to install and login thru SAPGUI.

When I try to login to the portal, I do not have the correct passwords for J2EE admin or any users.

      1) I am suspecting the "Getting Started guide" may be pointing to an old version (CTB..?) ??
I used the same UserId/Passwords and not able
         to login.
It says J2EE port is 50000 which didn't work for me.
I used port 54200 that you gave and it worked.

Cold you please check the document/link for "Getting Started" at the beginning?

      Any help is appreciated.

      Hello Siva,

please be aware, that the "Getting Started" Guide is related to the Java ONLY VMWare Edition and so in no way related to the Java and ABAP Trial Version I've described in my Blog.

      Thanks for the clarification.

Is your blog different than this thread?
If it is, could you please give a link to it?

Also how can I look at the book/manual that you are referring to?

I am not able to log into the portal.
         a) How can I get the passwords for J2EE_ADMIN,
            and other userIds.

         b) Alternatively, If I reset them on ABAP
stack, will they be changed on to the
            portal side?

Thanks for your enthusiasm and help.

      Hi Gregor,
thank you for the great description.
I have a performance question. I ran the SLES on a VMware Server 1.0.5/ Vista Business as basis Operating System with 2GB RAM(CPU CoreDuoE4500). At startup of the SLES i gave him 900 MB.
Looking into the WindowsTaskManager i see the Task vmware-wmx.exe with about 25 MB RAM and the task vmware.exe with about 4 MB.
The response time of the SAP application is very slow.
      any idea?
      thanks

      Hi Juergen,

      1) By default it is recommended to give 1.5G RAM to VMWare player. See what you can do.

      2) Vista performance seems to improve quite a bit with SP1.

      Good luck, Siva

Thx for the answer, but i have to admit, that even after login with sap*/sapn4sadm i get an DBIF_RSQL_INVALID_REQUEST, but then i can switch to "slicense" and "Easy Access" as well.

System: VMWare Server, under OpenSuSE 10.3.
      ----- Begin SAP License -----
      SAPSYSTEM=N4S
      HARDWARE-KEY=J1226376836
      INSTNO=DEMOSYSTEM

But: during the startscript i get this

      Checking db6 db Database
      ------------------------------
ABAP Database is not available via R3trans

      Might this be the problem?

      Thx again for any help

      Hi,
the R3Trans message i got also - i think no problem.
Maybe you login with the SAP* user and check the SU01 Transaction (Benutzerpflege), if there is a user developer.
      P.S.
The DBIF_RSQL_.. message is a network message - i saw it in google.
      good luck

      Thanks both for your answers.

developer exists, but still the license error.

but: if i press F1 it also draws an error regarding DBIF_RSQL :/

The only error when starting with the SLES10 is

      /usr/sap/N4S/SYS/exe/run/startsap: line 1687: cd: /root: Permission denied

      Any clues?

      Hi,

I have the same error. Okay, I changed the Name of the Server and used a new network card to generate a new mac address.

I got the new license key. Everything seems to work. The license is accepted, but the HW-Key doesn't show up in the slicense Dynpro. Odd.

Secondly, we have Patchlevel 12 on the system,  but there is a coding error in the INT_VCM_GET_SYSTEM_DATA function, generating a wrong Customer-Key.

      After "*Customer-Key ermittlen" there should be a code = 4 instead of a code = 2.

That's fine but you can't change the coding with SAP* and the developer is not working and would need a developer key for the system anyway.

Is there a vitual maschine with a later patch level?

Or how can I patch the system?

      Any solutions???

      Thx, Lutz Varoquier

Okay, now I got it working.

After my second hd of my virtual maschine got corrupted I just copyied the second hd of my original virtual maschine.

Now the license key is working correctly.

      Hi there,

I also have the "Error in licence check" when trying to logon with other than SAP*. License generation worked well and traffic light is showing green. Only the "expiration date"-field in system status stays empty. Can someone please try this:
      {code}saplicense -show
      saplicense: no license entries found{/code}

      Thanks for any help.

      Hello Michael,

as mentioned under point 3.2 yoif you get the error "Database is not running" you can try  the command "db2start" before you use "startsap n4shost".

      Hello again,

As I mentioned in an offshoot of https://weblogs.sdn.sap.com/cs/user/view/cs_msg/32350 , I was having long hangs where the whole VM (and even VMware?) would freeze for on the order of 5-10 minutes.  I finally noticed that the VM's CD/DVD drive indicator was on solid when this happened.  (There was no physical disk in the drive.)

      The CD-ROM device settings were
      [x] Connected
      [x] Connect at power on
      (*) Use physical drive
        Location (*) Host ...

Clearing the first two check boxes made the problem go away.  So something in the combination of this VM, VMware Server 1.0.5.80187 and Windows
2003 Standard Edition 5.2.3790, SP2 does not seem to do well with an empty drive.

p.s.: At the end of 4.1, shouldn't that be as user "n4sadm" instead of "n4shost"?

      Regards,
      Rich

      Hi,

I want to be able to build our application under this VM.  It requires curses and so will not build without the appropriate header files, etc.  The VM appears to have ncurses-5.5-18.11 installed, so I seem to need a compatible version of ncurses-devel.  I tried to add it with Yast, but Yast seemed to want the distro disk (DVD1), which of course I don't have.  (And I've inadvertently screwed up the Software Management installation source(s) setting so it is no longer aware of the disk contents.) I haven't been able to find a suitable version on the web.  http://www.novell.com/products/linuxpackages/server10/i386/ncurses-devel.html lists         /suse/i586/ncurses-devel-5.5-18.2.i586.rpm, but indicates no source other than DVD1.  (I must admit being unsure how compatible package rpms might be between various flavors of Linux or versions of SUSE.)

So, the generic question is, is there a repository or a .iso image of the SLES10 distro where I can get packages to add to this VM?

      Thanks!
      Rich

Excellent!  I got it setup after a few minor snaffus.  One question - I'm a newbie at SAP and I was wanting to connect to my VM session using the SAP GUI for Windows and Java.  Any idea where I can get this from?  The link (ftp://ftp.sap.com) provided in the tutorial does not work.

      Hey Gregor,
Thanks for the good illustration. But I am unable to perform db2start from n4sadm user.I got the following when i executed db2start

SQL6048N  A communication error occurred during START or STOP DATABASE MANAGER processing
SQL1032N No start database manager command was issued.  SQLSTATE=57019.

On checking the db2diag.log i found the following:

FUNCTION: DB2 UDB, license manager, sqllcRequestAccess, probe:2
MESSAGE : ADM12008C  The product "DB2 Enterprise Server Edition" does not have
a valid license key installed and the evaluation period has expired.
Functions specific to this product are not enabled. If you have
licensed this product, please ensure the license key is properly
installed. You can install the license via using License Center or
db2licm command line utility. The license file can be obtained from
                your licensed product CD.

So i went and changed the permissions to the filesystem /db2 to 777.
When i tried again i got the following msg
      n4shost:n4sadm 47> db2start

I had the same problem and finally got it fixed this morning.  I'm not sure what exactly made the difference, but did 3 things differently:

      0) Un-rared all the files again to get a fresh start.

      1) Switched to bash (troubleshooting in csh was irritating; plus I needed to tweak the path ) (type: bash )

      2)  I added /sbin to my PATH.  No idea if this mattered either, but I wanted ifconfig in my path.  PATH=$PATH:/sbin   [RETURN] export PATH

      3) Copied the license key into the /home/n4sadm (I just ftped it from desktop)

There's also some stuff in the Getting Started guide (which Greg linked to) that's not here.  Like changing the hosts file on host machine.  That part probably didn't matter.

Other than that, it's possible that the license key is time-dependent and nothing I mentioned mattered except retrying (I have no idea).

Either way, something made it work.  Good luck.

How can I stop the startupof the J2EE system so that I am able to access the console?

      Hi Fernando,

that sounds not so good. It means that the destination host is unreachable. The ping have to work before you try any other higher level. Have you checked that the VMWare Network settings are set to "Bridged"? Is a DHCP server running in the network where your computer is attached to?

the SAP NetWeaver 7.0 - Java and ABAP Trial Version on Linux - VMware Edition does not contain the Portal. But when you have access to the SAP Service Marketplace and you also have the authorization to download the Enterprise Portal Core (EPC), the installation should be straight forward.

      Hi,
First tx a lot for your documentation - it went exactly as you specified!!!
Can I logon other clients beside 001?
1.I want to logon with sap* user (for example) to client 000,066? also I want to logon with user DDIC and couldn't.
Can you pls help me here?
      2. since I'm very very new to sap, I need to understand - a user is deifined in a client level or in a system level? (actually, I want to understand, if a user sap* on client 001 is the same one as user sap* in client 066 with the same password... and what is the meaning of a client at all?!)
      3. How can I reset a password without logging into the sap - is it possible at all? (I want to logon with all the sap standard users: sap*,ddic, earclywatch.)

      tx a lot.

      Hell Gregor,

Thanks a lot for a great blog. I am stuck at a point now.

Earlier I had an issue to connect to the internet to download the license. I figured that out. I had to change from option Bridged to NAT. Now I am able to connect to the internet via the firefox in the VM.

But when I tried to login to the SAP I got a message "ivml2005" was not recognised... I changed that to the IP address that I got from doing ifconfig.

Now I am getting a message "Connection refused".  Details of this message indicated below:

      Hi everybody,

I´ve got a problem, at point 4.1 you describe how to access the Java Stack. I got the ip adress with ifconfig but when I type "http://ip-address:54200" a message which call "Object not found" come. After that I restart the database with the command "stopsap n4shost" and "startsap n4shost", but not with the user n4shost (because this user doesn´t exist in my system). I restart with the user n4sadm.
My Question is now, does the file stil exist on the site "ipaddress;54200" ?
      Or what is my mistake?

      Thanks for your help,

      Hi Gregor,

I´ve tried it with the address from 4.2, but it doesn´t work.
Should I configure the ethernet card in any way?
I have change the option at ethernet from bridge to NAT, but now I get the same failure as Sachin in the comment "Connection refused". When I try to start the the database with "db2start", there is a failure which call "SQL6031N  Error in the db2nodes.cfg file at line number "1".  Reason code "10". What can I do against this failure?
Do I have to install the Suse new?

When I attempt to download SLES10SP1VSAP.rar from the link on http://download.novell.com/Download?buildid=DkzX86IfrCI~ using fx, I receive an error :

Redirection limit for this URL exceeded.  Unable to load the requested page.  This may be caused by cookies that are blocked.

The browser has stopped trying to retrieve the requested item. The site is  redirecting the request in a way that will never complete.

If I use IE, then I just get what appears to be an infinite loop of security warnings about being redirected.  Where can I successfully get a copy of SLES10SP1VSAP.rar from ?

      Hi Gregor,

Thanks for the tips and tricks, they sure helped.

I've got a license key (internal) installed and the system starts up (ABAP & Java side).

My problem is with the user DEVELOPER, when I try to create a new ABAP program the system asks for a developer key even though I find an entry in table DEVACCESS for the DEVELOPER user.

      Any ideas?

      Regards,
      Martin

Hy Gregor, very compliments for this blog!!
I have this question: You have wrote this: After that I've double-clicked the "SAP NetWeaver 70 - Java and ABAP VMware Trial.part01.rar"-File and opened it with WinRAR. I've extracted all the content to the VMWare sub-folder I've created before.

Ok, is correct but how i can use the other rar part: part02.rar, part03.rar..part08.rar?
      Thank's.

      Hi Andrea,

the other RAR Files are used automatically when you open the first file. The RAR File was split up to simplify the download.

      Best regards

      Hi Everybody,
I got crazy for a while with license installation issues, so here's my solution (I've read also somewhere else, but not so explicitely as I mean to write it).
After you install (appearently successfully) the license, if you get:
      - "error in license check" when logging on with DEVELOPER, or
      - "disptacher running but no server connected" when accessing the J2EE stack via browser (e.g. http//ivml2005:542000)

      >>> PAY ATTENTION <<<<br/>
The story is: YOU MOST PROBABLY NEVER REALLY INSTALLED THE LICENSE!!! Because you waited more than 30 minutes since you started the instance (startsap n4shost).

      So my solution, clean one:
      1. trx SLICENSE, delete the new (fake) license
      2. as n4sadm, stopsap n4shost
      3. reboot SUSE OS
      4. as n4sadm, startsap n4shost
      5. install N4S.txt into the SAP system QUICKLY 😉 that is before 30 mins
      6. you're done: you MUST see all the four fields (Active HWD key, Inst Number and so on) with values (i.e. NOT EMPTY) in the main screen of trx SLICENSE.

      Cheers,
      Alex

I know this is too late reply. You do not need to install sap license within 30 min. Just restart the sap system after you install license. You wnot see any issue.
