Ecosystem We released 2 big parts of the Crystal Reports 2008 ecosystem last week.

BusinessObjects Enterprise XI 3.0 is the Enterprise-class BI platform that runs both Crystal Reports and other content like Xcelsius and Web Intelligence. It’s the upgrade from BusinessObjects Enterprise XI Release 2. The major new Crystal Reports feature in this platform release is Publishing. Publishing is also known as report bursting that allows one or more reports to be published out to a dynamic recipient list. The recipients can be either BOE users or regular email addresses. Recipients can recieve their content in either .RPT format, HTML, PDF, or any of the other Crystal Reports export destinations. It’s a very powerful feature that is well worth the upgrade.

Crystal Reports Server Embedded 2008 is a less familiar product that we sell only to other software companies for embedding into their applications. It’s a lightweight but scalable reporting server that runs as a Windows service. Unlike Crystal Reports Server, it has no built in portal, scheduling, or security. Back in v10 we sold this to all customer as Crystal Reports Advanced Developer. This product is valued by our OEM customers because of its high scalability and small footprint. In this release we’ve added support for all the cool new Crystal Reports 2008 features, and improved scalability by supporting running multiple services on the same machine as documented in this whitepaper.

We are busy working on the other major parts of the Crystal Reports 2008 ecosystem – Crystal Reports Viewer 2008, Crystal Reports Server 2008, and Crystal Reports Basic for Eclipse 3.

I’ll blog about those more as they become available.

Cheers, Blair
