Collaborate on the New Developer Library XI 3.0

Developer Library 3.0The latest release of the Business Objects Developer Library was made available this week. This newest version contains all of the updated docs for the new Business Objects XI 3.0 and Crystal Reports 2008 product suite. The new Developer Library is not just entirely about the newest suite release of the documentation, it now allows all of us to collaborate by sharing code, comments, and ask for clarifications on the content.  At the bottom of every page in the documentation the end user is provided with an Add Comment link. This enables you to add to the documentation by providing user contributed content that can be viewed by other end users.

The documentation team will be provided with a report on all the comments. The goal is to take all of the best comments and use them to provide updates during the regular service pack schedule where some of the comments may even make it into the official documentation.

We hope you find this new feature useful and are able to learn and share through the new comment feature.

About the solution (For those interested in Drupal or the Dita XML Spec)

The integration of the Business Objects developer documentation and Diamond is made possible by a new Drupal module that was developed by a University of British Columbia (UBC) Computer Science student while on a Co-op term at Business Objects.

The task was to integrate the Diamond community which runs off the open source Drupal content management system with Dita XML content. Having standardized on the Dita XML specification, Business Objects needed a way to import the Dita content into its Drupal community infrastructure.

While I’m not really the right person to talk about the implementation, the solution did give us the following features:

  • Import Dita content as Drupal Nodes
  • Import Dita content to populate a Java Script table of contents
  • Provide permanent node URLs even when the content is updated from new Dita source files
  • Maintain comments for Drupal nodes even when the content is updated from new Dita source
