In 2006 I started with SAP Software especially Business Intelligence, NetWeaver Portal and Visual Composer. After a month I heard about SDN and that there is a community. I thought, wow, this is a great community as I know these communities from open source software projects and I love them. Everyone benefits from such communities and SAP has also a great community. SAP benefits from SDN because of the feedback about their software, suggestions how to improve it and developers all over the world writes blogs, articles and so on how-to use the SAP software and as a developer you benefits from the great community because you get answers in just a few minutes… fantastic!
In the beginning I asked some questions. Then I started to answer questions in the Visual Composer Forum. After a while I came in contact with other Visual Composer developers and helped them. In February I wrote my first blog about Using ABAP BAPIs/RFCs in Visual Composer (You find them here:
Visual Composer and ABAP RFC/BAPI a powerful combination part II)
then Mario Herger asked me if I would like to become an external SDN moderator. I agreed, because I always was active member in those communities (open source communities) during my business informatics study. Since February we are in touch and discuss how we can improve the SDN and of course about Visual Composer. I planned a year ago a vacation to the USA in September this year with my brother Mario (he is also called Mario, this is a blind chance). That was the chance to meet Mario in Palo Alto and also visit the SAP Labs.
Our first meeting was on Saturday evening. I told Mario in a call in which Motel we had checked in. So one thing was clear Mario Herger was our driver for this evening. 😉
Mario shows us Palo Alto and invited us into a sports bar, where Hefeweizen was offered. This Hefeweizen was brewed by the owners. Mario told us that the two owner of this sports bar had learned the brewing process in Bavaria. So the beer tasted fantastic! It was a great evening with a lot of witty anecdotes from Mario’s SAP time. I really enjoyed the time. I use this blog to thank Mario for spending his time with us.
On Monday when we came back from our San Francisco trip Mario invited me to the SAP Labs in Palo Alto where I met the other SDN guys like Mark Finnern. Mark and the other guys are responsible for the SAP TechEd organization. So one thing was clear we would meet us again in Munich at the SAP TechEd 2007. I also was informed by Mario that there is someone who is responsible to send me all the SDN T-Shirts. 😉 They showed me also my next shirt the 5K… Maybe this needs some time until I can write a blog about getting my 5K shirt… 😉 We also used the time to talk about my work at the IBSolution. After a while of discussing we left the SAP and California for visiting Seattle and the rest of the West Coast. I’m looking forward to publish more pictures on my website.
It was a fantastic vacation and a great experience that SDN is more than a community for SAP developers, it’s a place where friendships emerge. Thanks to Mario and Mark for their time.
Soon I will write about my first participation at SAP TechEd 2007 in Munich and the very hard night after the SAP evening event.
