  • Are the communities alive and breathing? Are they healthy and thriving?  Our mid-year satisfaction survey has removed any doubts. Here is an overview of the results.
Mid-Year Survey Results

The Community Network mid-year satisfaction survey is a pulse-check on the SDN and BPX communities. Starting in late July, the survey ran for three weeks and collected just over 1,100 responses. For the first time, we separated BPX from SDN questions so that we could focus better on each individual community and fine-tune our community roadmaps.

Survey findings show that SDN members continue to show their passion with an outstanding 71.8% Net Promoter score. Overall satisfaction with SDN stands at an all-time high 4.32 (scale 1-5). Moreover, 74% use SDN every day as a professional tool, both for learning and sharing information.

Members show more ambivalence towards BPX, however. BPX Net Promoter stands at 11.7% and the overall satisfaction score for BPX is 3.66. BPXers tended to give shorter, less informative answers to the open-text questions. The respondents seemed less clear about what they want or expect from the BPX site. This reaction should not be particularly surprising at this early stage in the community’s development. BPX is still building out and adding content. Its boundaries and scope are still being defined.

The survey also indicates that Google is the search engine of choice for both communities. Several members specifically said that they preferred Google search to the native Trex engine. We believe, however, that our current initiative (Search 2.0) will significantly improve our members’ search experience using the native engine.

The highly active community forums are the top-ranked feature in SDN and BPX, followed closely by library content (articles, how-to guides, and whitepapers), blogs, and the points-recognition system.

Paradoxically, the most popular features of SDN and BPX drew some criticism from the community. We were told that there’s too much “noise” in the forums, that blogs can be trivial or irrelevant, and that library content is often “fluff.” Additionally, abuse of the points system is often identified as a negative influence on content quality.

Generally, we are extremely satisfied with this input from the community. Satisfaction and loyalty continue to be very high, and we are already addressing the problem areas that the community has identified. The low BPX scores are cause for some concern, so we will watch BPX carefully. We will add compelling BPX-related content, build out the industries sections, and intensify our focus on the role of BPX by driving the adoption of enterprise SOA and BPP.
