In our short series on Engineering the Business Process Platform for Healthcare, we have covered Engineering a Business Process Platform for Healthcare Part 1 - Support for Core and Context we feel such a platform is valuable, discussed the Engineering a Business Process Platform for Healthcare Part 2 - Key Concepts & Components and also the Engineering a Business Process Platform for Healthcare - Part 3 The value of models. So it's about time for some inside views and first results, don't you think?

During the summer break some of us here at SAP have been busy giving the platform a face, and thanks to these colleagues I am able to share with you some interesting information on how to explore available Enterprise Services using the Enterprise Services Workplace and the Healthcare Provider Solution Map. I assume that you're familiar with the general structure of SAP's Industry Solution Maps and especially with our version for Healthcare Providers.

When you look at the Enterprise Services Workplace you have a couple of options to explore the Enterprise Services:

  • You can browse the Enterprise Service Index (by Process Components or ES Bundles)
  • Or, you can explore the Enterprise Services along the Solution Map.

Regardless of which way you choose, I highly recommend reading  the How-to-Use ES Workplace Guide, to make full use of the capabilities.

Let me briefly introduce both ways for the Business Process Platform for Healthcare.

Explore Enterprise Services using the Solution Map

To start exploring Enterprise Services along the Solution Map scroll down to Public Services and click Healthcare - Healthcare Providers. You can choose the Expand All option to open the Solution Map in the detail level. Then look for the small green circle, which indicates areas where Services are available. You can then drill down further to the technical details of the Service Interface.

Explore Enterprise Services using the ES Bundle WiKi

Another way of exploring Enterprise Services is to look at the ES Bundle documentation. Using WiKi technology, SAP offers a whole new way of interactive and extensible documentation. Besides the ES bundles delivered in 2006, mid-year 2007 and those available December 2007 there is preview section for upcoming bundles.

And here you can find the documentation of our first ES Bundle Patient Administration containing Enterprise Services provided by SAP Patient Management.

As you can see, we have put in a lot of effort to provide information about the Services and also wanted to document the business context we had in mind during the design phase. For example, you can see that the Services of the ES Bundle Patient Administration aim at supporting certain Use Cases - most of them are also described by IHE.

Another example relevant for Healthcare providers would be the ES Bundle Resource and Supply Chain Planning for Healthcare Providers.

I hope that by exploring the Services you get more insight into the platform. As ever, we are very interested in your feedback.
