The TechEd 2007 Profile Contest

I’m really looking forward to TechEd 2007. Part of the reason is it combines two of my favorites – traveling and people. I love meeting new people and especially meeting people I’ve been in touch with throughout the year but never had a chance to meet in person. One of the reasons I really like the profile section in the wiki is that is helps me get to know other community members better. In a way I couldn’t just from the other sections of the site. For example when Craig highlighted Frank’s profile page in this Profile Spotlight: Frank Brackmann While unfortunately I’ve never met Frank, I can now guess that he is a creative, young, fun loving and helpful person. Had I checked out Frank’s business card I would know his SAP areas of expertise and contributions but not much more. So the profiles can really show a whole other side of our contributors.  That’s why I’m so happy about our new contest – it combines my two loves…people and traveling or in one word TechEd!  So how does it go…every person who opens a profile (and anyone with 100 points gets an invitation to do so) marks his/her page with the label of the TechEd location they plan on attending (in addition to the “profile” label everyone must use). For example I marked my profile with all 3 TechEd labels (see below image) since optimistically I’ll be attending all three. image  Then before each TechEd, a panel of judges will chose the best profile for each location. Each winner will be announced in the Community Day (formerly known as SDN Day) of that location. Each of our three location winners will receive 200 points and a prize!   Each community member will be able to search the profiles to learn who will be coming to the TechEd he/she is attending and learn a bit about each other before meeting face to face.   So get creative and make the most out of your profile! I’m looking forward to meeting our members first via their profile and then at the TechEd of their choice.

Quite seriously one of the best ideas I've heard for TechEd yet and I was even told about it before the blog was posted but still think this is probably the best idea of all!

Last year during Community Day (formerly known as SDN Day) we did rounds of Speed Networking (a.k.a. Speed Dating for Geeks) and it was a huge success and we were told one of the best aspects of the whole deal - so this year it's a give in that it'll be there as well - now take that together with what Gali has just come up with and we've got a rockin combination! Think about it, I can scan the profiles that will be there in Las Vegas and then keep my eye out for those there. My profile I list "blogger" and "teched_us_07" so if I search for those two labels I should find all bloggers attending the Las Vegas TechEd - how cool is that! It's a living directory!

You go girl.  That's creative and useful.  Last year there was an experiment with Tech Connect which was an external vehicle.  This year we can use our own wiki to track the folks we would like to meet up with and connect with.  Thanks for the idea.

There's a Community Day in Melbourne, Australia, on Sunday 3rd June. Label community_day_au will help find those who plan to attend.

See you there! (Sorry, airfares not included...)
