If you’re interested in the Trial Version and you like to download it, please check the system requirements first. If your PC doesn’t meet the requirements the installation might fail or the performance will be very bad (which might reduce the fun to work with ABAP). The download consists of two rar-files SAPNW2004sABAPTrialSP11.part1.rar and SAPNW2004sABAPTrialSP11.part2.rar. These two file should be downloaded into same directory. Since both of them are bigger than 1 GB the download might take some time. To find out whether the downloads are complete you can check the file size (click on the file in the Explorer and choose ‘Properties’): …part1.rar = 1.572.864.000 and …part2.rar = 1.189.536.491 If everything is alright so far you have to extract the files with an appropriate rar-tool (if there is none on your computer just google for ‘rar tool download’ and download and install it on your PC). Just click on the first one (…part1.rar) and after a little while your unpacked structure should look like:

image

The rar-tool creates a structure that you can see in the right side of the Explorer window. In the DOC directory you can find all HTML stuff related to the installer. The image is the installation itself. There are two database tools in the maxdbtools directory. And the SAPGUI directory contains a Compact SAP Logon 7.10 that you should use as User Interface. To start the ABAP server installation click on ‘start.htm’ and follow the dialog steps.

image

Be sure to check the system requirements. It is also important that there are no remnants of an older Trial Version or Sneak Preview installation left on your PC.
The Installation can be started from the Installation page by clicking on the word ‘Installer’.
Be aware that the installation of an SAP system is typically a pretty complex task, with installing a database, starting it, filling it with a huge amount of data, configuring the network connection, starting the system and doing lots of configuration steps. Therefore the installation guide of a real SAP system consists literally of hundreds of pages for experienced administrators. All this is hidden in this trial version as good as possible but nevertheless it is done under the hood. So it might be a good idea to leave the installation alone and not to work heavily on the PC during the installation.

image

This window shows you the real beginning of the installation process. The only information you have to provide during the installation is the target directory and you have to define the master password for the database. (the users of the ABAP trial server itself and their passwords are predefined)
The installation typically takes between half an hour and two hours dependent on your hardware. Therefore you have to be patient especially at 16% and 43%. Don’t worry if the installation seems to make no progress for a while at these points. As long as the hard disk is turning everything is ok. If you cancel the installation process manually you might leave the system in an indefinite state which may cause trouble with a new installation.

image

When the installation is finished the system will ask you how you to proceed. If you have already a SAP Logon on your PC you just can click on ‘Next’ which will start the Application Server and the SAP Management Console for monitoring purposes. If you don’t have the SAP Logon yet on your PC, it would be a good idea to uncheck the check-boxes and install the GUI first. For that you have to go to the SAPNW2004sABAPTrialSP11 directory and open SAPGUI folder.

image

By doubleclicking on ‘SapGuiSetup.exe’ you will start the installation of the Compact SAP Logon 7.10. In the dialog you are guided through some information pop-ups and finally you come to the window with the product selection. Just click on the ‘Select all’ that will check the check-box for you and then choose ‘Next’ and finish the installation.

image

image There will be a new icon for SAP Logon on your desktop now. After the installation of the SAP Logon a reboot might be required.

In the next edition of ‘ABAP Trial Version for Newbies’ it is shown how to start the Application Server and how to logon with the SAP GUI to the system.

There are two forums where you can post your questions and ask for help in case of trouble.

      Hi,

I’ve tried downloading the trial version but it is unavailabe with this error

ISA Server: extended error message :

      200 PORT command successful.
550 /pub/sdn/devkits/netweaver/abap/SAPNW2004sABAPTrialSP11.part2.rar: No such file or directory.

Any ideas where I can get the download from?

      hi,

afaik, you cannot have to different sapgui versions on your client machine.

but it doesn’t matter. you have two options:

      – don’t install the sapgui 7.0, stay with your old one and access both your existing systems as well as the new testsystem
      – upgrade the sapgui to 7.0 and access both your existing systems as well as the new testsystem

you won’t have any problems in either case.

anton (using 7.0 and happily acessing 4.63 to 7.10 backends)

    Hi ABAP team,
Yesterday I installed the NSP SP11, and it was done in 40 minutes without any problem.
The only problem I have so far, that in SAPGUI 710 patch 0 the New ABAP Editor code hints doesn’t work, unfortunately it’s the same in my company laptop. I hope patch 1 will solve this.
    Thanks for the good work!
    Best regards,

    Hi

I tried installing Netweaver 2004s ABAP trial version. I had one
aborted installation, so I tried re-installing. During the re-install it took
a suspiciously short time and when trying to start the application
server, this is the error I got :

    =========Starting Server NSP ========
    ======= Starting Database instance ==============
    System error 3 has occured
The System  cannot find the path specified!
The System  cannot find the path specified!
    ======== Start database failed ===============

After the re-install, I noticed that Max DB had not been installed and
I had to specifically install it, but even after that it gave me this
    error.

Your help in resolving the matter would be greatly appreciated. I have
a dell laptop with a 60G drive partitioned as c: and e: I have set all
install folders for SAP and related components under e:

      Hello Shantanu,

Usually this kind of questions are quickly answered in one the forums Manfred mentioned.

Nevertheless, this kind of error could occur when the following folder exists before you start the installation:
      C:Program FilesCommon FilesInstallShieldUniversalSAP

Try to delete this folder including sub-folders and re-install the trial version.

Perhaps you should also delete MaxDB related entries in your Windows registry like mentioned here:
SAP Netweaver 2004s ABAP – remove MaxDB instance

      before installing again.

      Hope this helps,
      Klaus

I got the system up and running. Works fine after
a couple of attempts. (Had previous ver and needed to cleanup and re-install)

Now, I want to go ahead and apply the 3 month lic
    key while I am installing.

I run SLICENCE after getting my NSP.txt file from
    SAP.

I try to install the file and it complains the
file is not formated correctly. ?

    err msg:
Line 1 of the license key file: “—– Begin SAP License —–” expected.

I believe I followed the step correctly and I
look at the flat file and don’t see the text.
I do however have all the correct data in the file.

    Thanks,

Has anyone had an answer regarding this? I would also like to download the ABAP stack trial version but cannot find it anywhere either.

Is there a reason it is no longer available for download? For example, is a later version with some extra patches inside it going to be posted there soon maybe?

Appreciate a comment from SAP on this.

    Thanks,

      Hello Manfred..

I managed to install the trial version.
At the end of the installation, it asked me to
      1. start the application server
      2. start the MMC console.

I did not chose to start these 2 yet, because, I did not have the LOGON GUI. After that I went and installed the Managment console and had to INstall the MS LoopBack Adapter and make the hosts entry.

How do I start the application server, the MMC picture I see in your blog is sligtly different on my system.

All it has is the NSP, Machine name, Process List and SysLog.

I am thinking if the application server starts somehoe, it will show itself up under the NSP.

      Any help..?

When I click the Logon, it says “partner 127.0.0.1:sapdp00” not reached.
So I guess the server is not running..

I am new to this whole thing..

      Please help..

      Thx..

Is there any fix in sight for the restriction that a computer’s name can not exceed 13 characters?  In our corporate build – and I’ve seen enough other places’ lock downs to guess that we’re not alone – we have a naming convention that exceeds 13 characters and they’re pretty proud of it.  I can’t start the dispaching server with the long name, and I can’t change the name.  So I make do with the network IDES, but would be more productive if I could run the local copy.  Any hope?

    Hi Manfred –

Just wanted you to know that SP12 installation was a breeze.

My only questions had already been answered in the forums –

    1) changing the profile to set “no_automatic_user_sapsatar” to 0 (to allow for client copies;

    2) deleting SAP* user and readding with correct privs for client copies.

One thing you might pass on to the “powers that be” – it’s no big deal – just a little “anomaly”.

To get client-copy to work in XP, you have to share your root X:\SAP directory as “sapmnt” (where X is the drive you installed on), so that the \sapmnt\trans\log exists.  Otherwise, the client-copy complains that the log path doesn’t exist.  (This question had been asked/answered in the Forums for Unix/Linux systems, but not specifically for XP systems – it took me a moment to figure out which directory I had to share …)

Anyway, this experience with the trial version proves yet again (for me at least) the value of the SDN blogspace and the Forums – I used your blog to get me started and the Forum to clear out some minor underbrush.

    Best regards
    djh

    Hello there,

I was not able to the installation via the dialog box ( perhaps due to a 22″ screen?), and therefore I had to resort to setup -console.

This seemed to work well, but after that I can’t follow the instructions here. I can not, for example find a SAPMMC, I do not think the databases were initiated, etc.

Is there a list of differences between installing via the dialog box and the -console?

    Good Day.

I have drawbacks installing Abap Trial SP12. When it comes to 89% ends abruptly.

I set up MS Loopback Adapter. The operating system is Windows XP Professional SP3. 1Gb RAM. Disk Space 50Gb Free.
I have installed thousand and once and presents the same mistake. I have followed the procedure to uninstall the MaxDB, Stop service SAP, Clear Folders installed and clean record with RegCleanTool. And nothing, I am grateful for the help they can give me. Thank you.

    Hi Manfred,

Your instructions and download materials was very useful. Thanks a ton for that. I followed you and got installed the NetWeaver. Although the trial version is for 90 days as per the software license I found only 30 days validity for my installation. Could you suggest the way to extend this period to 90 days?

    Much thanks in advance!

    Hi Manfred

Thanx for the informative blog, it truly is helpful.

I am having a problem installing the trial version. After running the setup.exe file, the InstallShield wizard starts up indicating its preparing the Java virtual machine, then an error window pops up which states: java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: run Exception in thread “main”

I have tried un- and  reinstalling the java runtime environment as well as downloading all recent updates. Your assistance would be much appreciated.

    Regards
    JP

    1. Klaus Keller
      Hello JP,

the installer does not need any Java virtual machine installed on you pc, as it brings its own. To get more information on the error, you could start a command line console, switch to path where the setup.exe is located and start the installer by entering the command:
      setup.exe -is:javaconsole
A console will open and perhaps you can find more information on what went wrong.

      Kind regards,
      Klaus

      Hi JP,

bit late, but possibly worthy for others:
Dont “download” the setup.exe. Just follow the Path to setup.exe:
      …\SAPNW7.01ABAPTrial\image\setup.exe
Click on it and it should work!
