How-to create a portal system for using it in Visual Composer

In my first SDN blog I wrote about using ABAP RFC function modules in SAP NetWeaver Visual Composer and how to solve issues. There was a comment in my first blog from Vitaly, who asked me “How to add a system in the portal system landscape for using ABAP RFCs resp. BAPI in Visual Composer as I have done in my blog”. There were also similar questions in the Visual Composer Forum. That’s why I decided to write this blog about creating portal systems.     h4. Table of Contents   h5. System requirements   h5. Creating a SAP system using dedicated application server for BAPI/RFC   h5. Creating a portal system for BI Queries        System requirements    SAP NetWeaver 2004s BI SP08 or higher   SAP NetWeaver 2004s EP SP08 or higher   Internet Explorer 6 SP2 with flash plugin   MSXML Parser 4   Adobe SVG Viewer 3    h5. Creating Portal Systems   h5. Creating a Portal System for BAPI/RFC    First of all you have to decide which system you need. Do you need a “SAP system using dedicated application server“ or do you need a „SAP system with load balancing“? If you are not sure, which system do you need then ask your basis administrator. As a rough guide you can say that you use „SAP system with load balancing“ when you have more than one application servers. I think in most cases you have only one application server for your development so you usually use “SAP system using dedicated application server“. I explain the settings for both.  h5. Creating a SAP system with load balancing for BAPI/RFC     h5. Creating a SAP system using dedicated application server for BAPI/RFC     h5. Creating a portal system for BI Queries   Creating a portal system for BI Queries is similar as creating a system for BAPI/RFC. There is only one setting different in the connector settings. That means if you want to create a portal system for BI Queries you can copy an already existing system for BAPI/RFC and modify this setting. You have to right click on the BAPI/RFC System and choose copy. Then right click on the folder called system and choose paste. Then go to the connection settings and modify the system type to SAP_BW .  Modify System Type Figure 14: Modify System Type     Then save the modification and execute a connection test. If the connection test is successful you have access to your queries of the BW System.  Queries in Visual Composer

      Hi Marcel

This has been covered quite a few time as blogs and we have a portal wiki page here that might have been a better place to put this. That way people can add any missing pieces.

For example, it is important to make sure the end user permission flag is set for the system for all users or groups that need it.

      Cheers

      Hi Michael,

thanks for your feedback. Of course the Wiki is the right place for adding missing pieces, but this blog is the result of Visual Composer and ABAP RFC/BAPI a powerful combination part I, because there was a question from Vitaly of how to setup this portal connection for using RFC/BAPI. Another reason for this blog is that there were so many questions in the Visual Composer Forum about setting up Portal Systems.

You are right, this is nothing new, but I was asked for it and I decide to invest my time, so that it is easier for a beginner to start with Visual Composer.

If you think there are some points you can use in the Wiki feel free to copy them and if there are missing pieces please add them.

I look forward to further feedback.

      Best Regards,

      Marcel

Hi. I was able finally setup BW system as BAPI. I needed to do as well some user mapping of my Portal user into BW user. Not sure if this is specific to my environment, but connection did not work without that step.

      Thanks once again!

      Hi,

could you please post this question in the Visual Composer forum. There are more Visual Composer Experts... πŸ˜‰

Anyway, have you checked the user mapping in the user profile? You can do this also with the UME of the portal.

      Best Regards,
      Marcel

      Hi,

Your procedure dint work out for me.  Even in forums I see lot many ppl facing the same issue I am facing.  I get the error like this.
      *************
      Test Connection with Connector
        Test Details:
The test consists of the following steps:
      1. Retrieve the default alias of the system
      2. Check the connection to the backend application using the connector defined in this system object

        Results
      Retrieval of default alias successful
Connection failed. Make sure that Single Sign-On is configured correctly
      **********

I am sure that i have put my user mappings correctly.

      Hi Suresh,

please post question about the connectivity into our Visual Composer Forum and check the also the WIKI.

It seems that you have a security issue. Check your permissions of the backend user and also the user mapping or did you use signle-sign on via certificate?

Please open a thread for further discussion.

      Best Regards,
      Marcel

Do not agree with you that the port number should be default 80xx, this port no is for http.  The options chosen in your blog is asking for Message Server Port, which is default 32xx.

You can use the port number of application server or message server, this is also mentioned in the explanation of the Server Port field in the category connector. Of course you can also use the message server port like sapmsMarcel

I try to repeat blog's example. In Type System = "SAP R/3" -> [Look for service by name] - It's ok. But Type = "SAP BW"-> [Look for query]- It's not founded ZZ* query...

Are you able to find any query? I hope that you have created the ZZ* queries with the query designer. πŸ˜‰

Do you get any error message? - Can you also check if you have access to the queries with the query designer?

      Best Regards,
      Marcel
