Recently, I had a pleasure to attend several ASUG meetings and couple of internal meeting, where I came to realize that even after 3 years on the market several people still have issues with Netweaver’s numbering/acronym system… This is an attempt to clarify the muddy waters of mysterious and bizarre world of Netweaver nomenclature… I will preface that this is completely un-official attempt…

So here is the list (most of the time terms used somewhat interchangeably, thus complicating further already complex situation):

SAP NetWeaver ‘04

SAP NetWeaver 2004s

mySAP ERP 2004

mySAP ERP 2005

SAP ECC 5.0

SAP ECC 6.0

SAP NetWeaver AS 6.40
(previously SAP WebAS)

SAP NetWeaver 2004s
(AS ABAP and AS JAVA usage types)

SAP NetWeaver XI 3.0
(previously SAP XI)

SAP NetWeaver 2004s (PI Usage type)

SAP NetWeaver Portal 6.0
(previously SAP EP)

SAP NetWeaver 2004s
(EP and EPC usage types)

SAP NetWeaver BI 3.5
(previously SAP BW)/ SAP SEM 4.0

SAP NetWeaver 04s (BI and BI Java usage types) / SAP SEM 6.0

mySAP CRM 4.0

mySAP CRM 5.0

mySAP SCM 4.1

mySAP SCM 5.0

SAP NetWeaver MDM 5.5

NWDS 2.x

SAP NetWeaver 2004s (DI usage type)

This is very quick list of SAP components and corresponding Netweaver stacks… The good folks at SAP promised to rectify situation by addressing components as reference to NW stack. This will make life simple for most us, but until then you welcome to use my table and/or correct me…

Special acknowledgment goes to Michael Eacrett who provide key information and co-author this blog! Thanks Mike!

    You wrote

    SAP BW 3.5/ SEM 4.0

    NW04s BI/ SEM 6.0

(I hope that it takes HTML)

But from what I understand it should be

    SAP BW 3.5

    NW04s BI

    SAP SEM 4.0

    SAP SEM 6.0

BI is part of the NW04s and should not be mixed with SEM. While BI contains a large part of the former SEM-BPS it’s not the whole SEM that contains BCS, BSC, CPM etc. Your original line looked as if it was NW04s BI 6.0 which is wrong. Note that BI 7.0 or BW 7.0 don’t exist too, even if they were originally announced this way.

    Best regards
    Dirk

Eek, this looks awful. What I wanted to say was:

      SAP BW 3.5/ SEM 4.0       NW04s BI/ SEM 6.0
looks a bit strange. Correct is

      SAP BW 3.5                NW04s BI
SAP SEM 4.0               SAP SEM 6.0

BI is part of the NW04s and should not be mixed with SEM. Hi Dirk!
You are absolutely correct; the reason I put BW and SEM together is because a lot of people use these terms as one and the same. This is especially true for non-IT user… I am not even trying to explain difference between BW-BPS, SEM-BPS, and NW integrated planning. Brrr…

          Hi Maxim,

BI and SEM are not the same. SEM is a financial application (now delivered with mySAP ERP) built on SAP NetWeaver technology. I think it might be confusing if you merge the two together. Its the same as saying mySAP ERP is SAP NetWeaver.

For historical purposes, prior to SAP NetWeaver’s release, SEM did ship technology like the SEM-BPS engine but with the advent of SAP NetWeaver the technology was moved to SAP NetWeaver (BI). SEM then delivered business content running on the technology. The spilt is more logical now.

          I hope this helps,
          Mike.

    Hi Maxim,

I applaud your effort here to clarify the naming and numbering – It can be a very confusing to new customers.

However, I think you might have fallen fowl of the issue you are trying to correct 🙁 . There are some errors in your blog that we should correct otherwise we might confuse more people.

There are no more components in SAP NetWeaver 2004s (the core SAP NetWeaver release). Therefore there is no WAS 7.0, SAP PI 7.0, SAP EP 7.0, NWDS 7.0. There is no 7.0 release, just 2004s.
For more information please see this blog: /people/michael.eacrett/blog/2006/06/17/obituary-for-sap-netweaver-components-2003-150-2005
In addition some of the names of the applications are also incorrect.

Can I suggest that you can email me directly (Michael.Eacrett@SAP.COM) and we can work to get the your blog updated with the new information (it would be of great value to SDN to do so). I look forward to hearing from you.

    All the best,
    Mike.
