Immediate Community Response to the Wiki 1.0 Beta Release

Although barely a day old there is already a flurry of activity in this Beta version of the Wiki. And almost immediately folks have started populating pages and requesting additional new areas on the Wiki Main page that map to other forum questions or pre-existing FAQs that might have been previously presented as static web pages or in blog format.

Creating FAQ with Template

We have provided a simple FAQ template which enables contributors to begin to embed questions and answers using a manual link technique. See previous blog tutorial Wiki 1.0 – Just the facts, ma’am, er…FAQs for details of use.

Since we got some quick feedback about this today and while we have not yet implemented a macro TOC, I decided to follow the example and lead of content strategist and fellow team member, Scott Jones. Scott’s example can be found in the BI Accelerator FAQ. Scott used anchors and subtopics, so I tried to model a similar technique and wound up with a wiki markup template to cut and paste into newly generated FAQ pages, to make the work with questions in the wiki markup mode a little more structured and to improve the navigation (thanks, Scott).

This was accomplished largely due to the addition of the {anchor:top} notation forcing the cursor automatically to return to the top of page when hitting the TOP link and after navigating to a particular answer from a particular question.

TOC Style Wiki List

The wiki markup tags look like this:

Using the Anchors for Questions, Answers, and Navigation

Scott’s technique includes creating alias anchor names that are given a numbering sequence that can be expanded easily. Hopefully some kind of automation can improve ease of use, but in the interim, perhaps Scott’s example will help reduce some of the burden of remembering wiki markup syntax for creating lists of questions and answers in our FAQs. By the way, the help notation is visible and the extended Wiki help available when going to Edit mode and then the Wiki Markup Edit mode. Happy FAQing.
