To match with the overall granularity level within the SAP NetWeaver IT scenario framework, the former IT scenarios master-data consolidation, master-data harmonization, and central master-data management are now referred to as scenario variants under the new IT scenario master-data management.

The enterprise data warehousing IT scenario remains unaffected by this structural change. This way, the IT practice data unification now features the IT scenarios master-data management and enterprise data warehousing.

The IT practice consolidation now features the master-data management scenario instead of master-data consolidation.

For a better view of the update, see the Technology Map.

This change is also reflected in the corresponding IT scenario page on SDN.

  1. Markus,

Please let me know clear differences between the MDM and EDW Scenarios under Data Unification. A clear explanation of the roles of these two will definitely help and will definitely answer questions like “Do I need EDW or MDM?” and “How much role MDM has within EDW?” etc. I tried to go through the “What is the IT Scenario ‘Enterprise Data Warehousing’ about?”(
What is the IT Scenario ‘Enterprise Data Warehousing’ about?) blog, but could not really extract satisfactory answers.

    Thanks & Regards,

      Hi Rajani,

Both scenarios are complementary of course.
Enterprise Data Warehousing is about the processes involved in creating and operating a data warehouse in an enterprise-wide environment, and Master-Data Management is about consolidating, and harmonizing your master data in an enterprise-wide environment. The master-data consolidation scenario variant within master-data management explains this complementary approach best: Master data is consolidated (cleansed, enriched, normalized, and finally de-duplicated), and the overall ID mapping information (the individual IDs of identical records in the local application systems) can be sent to SAP NetWeaver BI to enable consolidated reporting.
As a prerequisite, your data warehouse must be fully operational – and this is what EDW is all about.
