Wipro passed 100K SDN Points. Congratulations.

Congratulations to Wipro for being the first company ever to get collectively more than 100.000 points on SDN. How nice to cross that line in between the two Sapphires. If you bump into one of them in Paris, shake their hands and thank them because SDN wouldn’t be the same without their contributions. For example the median time to first reply in our forums wouldn’t be under 30 minutes  without them. I am a bit bummed that I can’t be at Sapphire, but there is always SAP TechEd in the fall.

Just to put this accomplishment in perspective. To get 100K in the forums you have to get ten-thousand of your answers marked as “Solved my Problem”. The best SDNers average 2 points per post, so you need fifty-thousand forum posts to hit the 100K. In Blogs let’s say on average you get 50 points for a post, that means a company would need two-thousand posts to cross the 100K line.

Wipro once even tackled a whole topic: Creating a Comprehensive Collaborative Platform with SAP NetWeaver and created a wealth of content around it: Five-part article series,     related SDN TV demos,     topic-based demos: SAP NetWeaver XI,    Portal, JDI, and More and an ongoing blog series: The Architect’s World

A special thank goes out to the author of The Architect’s World blog series Kartik    Iyengar. He is the first one to fully understand the power of the reputation that you can achieve via SDN. Realizing that he rallied his  team and he also stepped up when there were questions regarding the quality of the contributions.

He once told me that it helps Wipro tremendously. We go to a prospect and start to introduce Wipro and they say: “Come on, we know you, you do all these excellent things on SDN.” It is a great ice breaker / door opener.

Congratulations and thank you to every one of Wipro’s SDN contributors. You did a tremendous job. That you have almost twice the amount of points as your closest competitor blows my mind.

P.S. We will enable a better view on the Top Companies on  SDN soon. It will look similar to the Top Contributor list with drill down into a company, into development areas and a 30 day view.

Please continue with the brickbats if any lousy content comes out from Wipro. A special thanks to all those who provide negative feedback.

If anyone of you is in Paris, would love to meet you up, see you at the ES Community meeting or the Pinnacle Awards tonight.

PS: Mark/Pranav/Craig/Marilyn: Special thanks to you all.

      Thank you and best regards

      Hi Mark,

      >>To get 100K in the forums you have to get ten-thousand of your answers marked as "Solved my Problem". There are around 154300 threads on SDN and out of which, 12320 solved threads. Also, there are 3750 blogs on SDN. Out of 3.45 million SDN registered users I see only 250 online users!

It would be better if the split up shows up how much is recommendation points! Because, this is not the first time Wipro is crossing 100K. The event took place 16th May 2006 and everyone on SDN witnessed it. But unfortunately, 2 user with 14600 points in total (fully got from recomendations) are caught by SDN moderators and their points are reduced. This made Wipro go down again to 94000 points.

It is very obvious that the above statistics and the reality is contradicting! It would be better if the drilling down is furthur into % of forum points, % of blog points, % of article points and MOST IMPORTANTLY % of recomendation points!!!

      Regards,
      Felix Jeyareuben

      Oh Felix,

Why do you always have to rain on the parade? I didn't mention articles, code samples and eLernings. All of them get you points too. Your numbers are off. I don't know where you took the 250 online users from. We are way beyond that. Right at this moment we have 406 online users in the forums. Select the top contributors and go down to page 19 top user number 316 is Rob Veenstra with currently 306 points. We have over 1000 users with more than 250 points and we are very proud of that fact. Kartik actually told us that he would prefer to split the recommendation points out and yes we will have more transparency into the points. I am very much looking forward to it, because then I don't have to write these explanations anymore.

      Best, Mark.

Just curious: where I can see total number of SDN threads (or should I manually sum threads shown in every forum???) vs number of "solved" threads. Also, where is statistics by total number of registered users?

      Thanks Mark,

I didn't mean to be a rain on the parade, but the facts are confusing. It was morning here when I looked https://forums.sdn.sap.com/online.jspa (and there was 250 online users).

Even 406 online users, is such a low number compared to 3.45 mil registered users. There are totally 9345 users with atleast 1 point. Assuming 1000 different active SDN contributors logs into SDN every day, there are only about 365000 unique users logging into SDN (for a year). Which says nearly 3 million users had never logged into SDN!! So, where have these 3 million users came from? (3.44 million users have zero points). I strongly believe that 3 million users (fake) are converted to 150000 SDN points and gone into various members/companies!

I thank you for looking into providing tansparency in SDN points 🙂

      Best regards,
      Felix Jeyareuben

      Sigh! 😐

Felix, where do you get your numbers from? You may have misread 344,000 as 3.44 million. Even that number is old. I would have loved to announce that we crossed the 400K line, but we are at 398,016 registered SDNers. Only 10 percent of all registrations have the recommendation field filled out and we only started that last year. You have a couple and I have a couple. It is not the majority of points for most people or companies.

Also "9345 users with at least one point" is only based on forum posts, but there a lot of SDN contributors that don't participate in the forums at all. You are also not counting all of the SDNers that post questions, but don't answer or who's answers have never gotten any points. They are still participating on SDN.

It is common knowledge that in an online community only 4% of all members actually participate, the rest are lurkers.

For the first time last week we had 2000 posts per day including Saturdays and Sundays in the forums. Doing this with just 400,000 members shows how active this community is.

You can't deny that Wipro is a big part of these activities and this post is a token of that appreciation. Please don't try to minimize their effort.

Nothing is perfect and as promised we are working on greater transparency, Mark.

      Mark,

      >>>>Why do you always have to rain on the parade?

I believe Kartik also wants this sort of support:
"A special thanks to all those who provide negative feedback."

as I believe that he'd rather have more quality WIPRO points

I'm not saying that WIPRO doesn't provide
quality points (I can only hope for more
developers like Sravya Talanki or Krishna Moorthy P or Bhavesh Kantilal from the XI area only) but still there are some who don't do such a great work as those mentioned by me and I'm sure that Kartik
will have a close look at them too

      Hi Michal,

      >I believe Kartik also wants this sort of support:
"A special thanks to all those who provide negative feedback."

To invite negative feedback shows greatness and willingness to improve the own performance even further. But there is a place and time for that. Kartik is very easily reachable via email and you can find his address in his Business Card: first name dot last name at wipro dot com.

      Please do so, Mark.

      Mark,

Sorry for asking such a dumb question. How the Top Contributing companies are picked?? Based on the URL provided in the Business cards or based on the email address??

Last but not the least, Congatulations to all you guys at Wipro....

      Hi Rajani,
This is actually a good question. It is derived from  the primary email address that you have posted in your Business Card (profile). We take everything from the @ until the next point and summarize it.
If you change yours within 24 hours it will be reflected in the listing.
      Best, Mark.

      Mark,

Thats a good piece of info. It would be great if you can update this in FAQs if it is not available. I has this impression because my company is not in the Top 50 even after some of us updated our URLs.

      Thanks again,

      Hi Felix,

I have worked for Cognizant for years before joining Wipro 4 years back and all I could say is it's "WE" who make things good or bad. It's not just game of points. It's too much more than that..Points do help to some extent but it's definitely not everything. I think you should appreciate the contribution from individuals and the organization without diluting their sincere efforts. Quality of contributions does matter and you have all means to question the quality of content.

I started contrubuting on SDN this month itself and now I do get lots of mails directly on my business id for help, and I do try my best to help wherever I can without bothering about points too much. There are many more who do the same...

As far as recommendation points are concerned, SDN does considers recommendation as a valuable contribution (20 points..does prove that). So, what's wrong ? My personal opinion is that 20 points are too much for recommendation and it should be reduced to 2 or 5 points or may be these points should be awarded based on some criteria etc.

      Regards,
      Piyush
