Graphical message mapping is a very useful function. It has a nice Data Flow Editor tool and is easy to understand. However, its representation in the Data Flow Editor has one limitation – it can show only one target field mapping at a time.
SAP has provided a ‘Text Preview’ option that displays the complete Message mapping. It can also be used for viewing the Element level mapping as a text. This has benefits such as quick review, easier comparison, and easier documentation. I am not sure which Service Pack had introduced this feature. I am using SP14. I would like to demonstrate the functionality of this feature, which should benefit at least some users.
I have created a simple message mapping that uses messages with 6 element nodes.
1) Text Preview of the message mapping for each element
In the Integration Repository of XI, in the Message Mapping, there is an Icon that says ‘Text in tree table view’ above the Target Message Type. Clicking this icon will bring up the ‘Mapping’ column as the second column.
Given below are the screens for each of the six elements’ mappings, with the corresponding Graphical mapping displayed at the bottom, and its text representation in the ‘Mapping’ column in the target message type.
2) Text Preview summary of the message mapping including all elements
There is an icon below the Tab names ‘Design’, ‘Test’ etc, that says ‘Text Preview’. Clicking this will display the summary of the Graphical Mapping as a text.
It appears that this is just a notional summary. It does not display the values used in the mapping functions, such as the constant values and other parameter values.
Before I end this weblog:
– I wish that SAP comes up with a more accurate representation of the Graphical Mapping with the ‘Text Preview’ option.
– I would also like to see that this representation becomes editable. This will make it portable (import / export across different landscapes), easier to review and correct, and quicker to develop. That will definitely promote the use of Graphical Message Mapping.
