Hey came across this great info for AJAX followers! The W3C has announced the creation of the new Web APIs Working Group and Web Application Formats Working Group as part of the Rich Web Client Activity.

The Web APIs Working Group is chartered to develop standard APIs for client-side Web Application development. This work will include documenting APIs for XMLHttpRequest, client interface, timed events, other network communication methods (e.g. IRC, JMS, Session Initiation Protocol), persistent storage on the client, drag and drop, file upload/download in order to enable richer Web Applications.

The Web Application Formats Working Group will develop declarative format for web applications and user interfaces, building on existing technologies (such as Mozilla’s XUL) in the marketplace where possible.
