To complement Ravikumar Allampallam’s MDM Client / Content Manager – Different Modes about the different modes of the MDM Data Manager, I’d like to make a few statements on the benefits of using MDM in the area of catalog publishing.

When you compare MDM-based product-content management and catalog publishing with common, solely DTP-based, catalog publication procedures, I see the key benefits of MDM as shown in the graphic below.

Remarks:

  • The MDM way of publishing product data allows loading and consolidating product data from different sources.
  • It provides a single source of truth, and assured product quality from the start.
  • Data consolidation features (in terms of structure and content) are combined with automated product layouts at highest level of consistency across all content.
  • Layout finalization steps are done in the DTP application.

This approach allows for maximum re-usability and is open to multi-channel publication (for example, Web catalogs).

In summary, the MDM approach brings big potential for reducing production cost and time compared to conventional catalog publication procedures. It is based on a complete quality loop which eliminates the risk of late error detection.
