SAP ViewPoint – A snapshot.

What it is :-

SAP Viewpoint is a tool which is used to organize contents based on one’s likes & dislikes. Its approach is incremental and interactive and easy to work on. Its dynamic approach of organizing contents makes it as a superior one.

It has an unique features like collaborative filtering. This is the way that viewpoint organizes the contents. It shows the contents which are pleasing to the users first who have similar taste on the article. Another unique characteristics of Viewpoint is Search engine. It searches more similar contents based on user’s desires.

How it works :-

It works based on expressing preferences for and against Discussion objects. Discussion objects are attributes combined with the article which helps users to rate about the contents.

SAP ViewPoint starts with a collection of articles. The goal is that by interacting with SAP ViewPoint and expressing preferences for and against discussion objects, the system will show you just what you want.

The preferences for each discussion object are set by hovering the mouse over them, which presents the following choices:

•At the far right is a box with a checkmark in it. Clicking on it means that articles with this discussion object will show up much more prominently in the interface.

•To the left are three green checkmarks, which allow 1, 2, or 3 of the checkmarks to be selected, which is called promoting the discussion object. The more checkmarks selected, the more likely articles with that discussion object will show up in the interface.

•The center box is neutral, meaning that this discussion object will not be considered.

•To the left are three red checkmarks that allow the discussion objects to be demoted in importance. The more red checkmarks, the less likely an article with such a discussion object will show up in the interface.

•At the far left is a box with an X in it. Checking this box blocks this discussion object and means that articles with that discussion object will not be shown on the front page.

Technical Details of Viewpoint. :-

This section of the article would walk you through the SAP ViewPoint technically.

How does it works:

SAP ViewPoint is driven by the Articles which the editor feeds into the Consumer folder, which are in a predefined XML format and have a .article(you can change it as required) file extension. SAP ViewPoint consumes the file and maps the entries of the tag to the database to retain the data for usage. The file then vanishes(deleted) from the folder. The admin can manage users, define Discussion objects, search articles.

The “” in WEB-INF/classes is one of the important files, which would help us configure viewpoint to our environment. The required database entries(here we used MS SQL) are also made, because, viewpoint uses a database to actually work along. This file also has entries to allow customize base-folder to dump our articles; to get the URL of the RSS formfeeds and time within which it needs to poll the base folder for articles and the RSS formfeeds and similar things.

User’s perspective:

Once the SAP ViewPoint, “viewpoint” application is up in the server (we assume Tomcat here which is in turn deployed on WAS), the user logs in using his authentication, and can see the articles which have been posted. The user rates the articles based on his choice(demote or promote the article). He/She can also define his own perspectives, viz., Portal, Online Newspaper and Plain List. The user can as well have any number of perspectives defined. The user can also configure the SAP Viewpoint so as to send him an e-mail, at a particular time & date, to notify him about the articles.

Integration With EP 6.0:

SAP ViewPoint can also be integrated with EP, as an iView. It can be done, by using URL iView, or which ever way the developer finds it convenient.

Here are the steps to integrate the ViewPoint as an URL iView:

•Create an iView(URL) in the EP • Assign the URL iView to a workset(for better presentation) • Create a Role and assign the workset to the role • Do the necessary EP user mappings. • Login as the role assigned to the user.

Watch out:-

We have already submitted our work on SAP Viewpoint to SDN.The demo will have step by step procedure how to configure and work with ViewPoint along with audio. The demo is expected to be live in SDN shortly.

Watch this space shortly where I will tell you the url for the same.
