An Old Basis Guy’s Perspective
For five years before I started working in Product Management at SAP, I worked for SAP Consulting as a Basis Systems Consultant. Once I became a Product Manager, there was a lot I had to learn to transition from the field, where I was implementing SAP systems, to understanding the “latest and greatest” – the SAP Web Application Server. For someone who grew up with ABAP, the learning curve was especially difficult on the Java side.
After going through the educational process myself (which is still ongoing!), I found that finding all of the information isn’t so easy. That is to say, there is a lot of information out there on the SAP Web Application Server, but it’s dispersed in many different documents, trainings and so on. Plus, now that I’m a Product Manager I encounter the difficulty and confusion first-hand. So, I decided to write a paper about what the SAP Web Application Server is all about, especially from the perspective of someone who is familiar to SAP Basis. It is available on SDN and is titled Introduction to the SAP Web Application Server. If you’d like to understand technical information about releases 6.20 – 6.40, including the ITS, then this overview paper is for you.
