All,
we managed to get a book out on Java Programming for SAP Web AS 6.40. The book is published by SAP Press (ISBN 3-89842-317-4):
Java Programmierung mit dem SAP Web AS
What to expect? For a very fair price you get more than 570 pages covering development topics such as J2EE, Web Dynpro, Web Services, Java Persistence (JDBC, SQLJ, CMP, JDO), Web AS architecture and supportability, Java Development Infrastructure (JDI) (both developer and admin perspective). Several well known authors both from J2EE engine development and product management have contributed their insights to the book.
We also built a DVD with Web AS 6.40 and Developer Studio trial running a local JDI and a lot of samples. The book is in German, English version will follow in two months.

I look forward to the book being published in English.

What OS/DB will the accompanying WAS 6.40 require?  I’m hoping it will support XP/MaxDB.  If so, does it require XP Professional, or will it work with XP home?

    Cheers,
    Scott

      Hi Scott,
thank you very much for your interest. The trial works with XP Home, XP Professional, Windows2000, each with MaxDB 7.5. We recommend 2 GB of main memory (due to server side components of JDI), but it runs also on 1 GB. 5GB hard disk required.
      Best regards
      Karl

    Hi, Karl,

Could I get an update on the status of the English version of this book?  Availability date? I am particularly interested in some of the things which may have changed between 6.30 and 6.40, such as web services and JDO.

    Thanks,
    – Bill

      Hi Bill,
we are in pretty good shape regarding the english version. I already sent 50% to the American publisher, the other half will follow end of this week. Then it is up to them. Typical production (proofreading, printing etc) will take 4-6 weeks.
So a publication date in April is realistic, March is ambitioned. But since the book is quite successful (over 2000 deliveries in German so far, good amazon rating), we can put some pressure on them to produce as fast as possible.
      Best regards
      Karl
